Burning Smell at higher RPM (W/O clutch engaged)

Just got my MS3 a week ago and I am still getting used to the clutch when taking off. A couple of times I have revved the RPMs up to 4-5k before the clutch engages, and for about the next 5 minutes or so I get a really nasty smell that reminds me a little of burning rubber, but a little sweeter.

I haven't done it in a few days as I have gotten used to the where the clutch engages I just wanted to make sure I wasn't permanently killing anything in the car :)

Let me know what you think.

If the car is still new, which in 3 weeks I would say it is it may need some breaking in time. When I first got my MS3 I had the same issue but as I drove it more it went away. Give it sometime and I'm sure it'll be fine. You're also sure you don't mean the tires correct, but the clutch? Because if you let loose in 1st - 2nd there's a great possibility of losing traction which could result in the smell you're mentioning.

Let everything settle, give it another week and see how everything is.

burning the clutch I assume because you are learning to drive stick. Common. It takes a little bit to get used to. I found the gas pedal way to sensative. Just give it enough gas to go up to 1500 rpm right as you hit the friction point.

drop it at 5.7 ;) before ur boost cuts off, otherwise, ur running no hp at all...
i remember my first oil change, i use to smell it everytime i drive my car, took it to the dealership and they found a dead bird underneath the engine !!!;)

Was it an eagle because I could stuff it and sell it ???? (hand)

well, the tech really seemed confused, bcuz seagulls are a decent size birds...and for that to be stuck there is really rare he said.....

he said he will never forget the experience ;)

all the new cars have the smell even the na ones... when i first got my 6 i was concerned about it and my friend told me every cars like that, shouldnt worry about it too much... and you got a ms3 for your first stick? is it your first car also?? you are one lucky dude!! take gooood care of your car man and have fun with it at the same time

You should definitely be not engaging the clutch at 4-5k RPM...you are burning up your clutch!!!! For normal driving all you need 1.5k RPM and for drag racing its 3k RPM feathering the clutch.

Be gentle on on that clutch for the first 500-800 miles... Make sure you don't glaze it!!!

Not my first car, or my first standard, but my last car was a GMC sonoma 4 cylinder engine with a hard clutch (took lots of pressure to hold it down) and didn't get high on the RPMs as easily as the MS3 gas pedal does :).

Once I got used to it I haven't run it up that high, but it is good to know that it isn't just me.

On a side note I bought my car at 8:30 at night and the detailers were out so I brought it back in yesterday for them to detail the car, and they scented the inside of the car with some sort of grape smell.... now it will be 2 weeks before I can show the car off to any guys :D.

brand new car/clutch before breaking it in I see
kiss your long lasting 100k clutch goodbye then

the ms3 was my first stick car, it was nice and stinky for the first few days...ull be ok, and if anything messes up before 12500 miles ur covered...like gears, clutch which is usually consider driver error for failure like wear and stuff

that smell is the undercoating on the hood. it happens on all newer cars, it goes away after awhile. but you will probably be used to the smell by then anyway.

i had that sickly smell when i had my 06 mazda6
