Buffing = swirl marks?

Ive never buffed any of my cars with a buffer in fear of those nasty swirl marks that show up even more on dark vehicles. Is this a result of someone doing it improperly or does it go w/ the territory?

After using a buffer I like to go back over with microfiber cloth to take any excess off.

yes it is because of doing it improperly. If you have never used a buffer before i would suggest picking up an orbital buffer instead of a high speed rotary buffer. It is much much much more user friendly. Also stay away from the wool bonnets until you really get the hang of either machine. They tend to be less agressive. I found that the orbital buffer and the meguire's nxt gets all the little scratches out quite well.

Improper

Yea its from people doing it improperly. If you are new at using a buffer do what GoFast says and get an inexpensive orbital buffer. They work great and do a lot better job then you can do by hand. The orbital buffers are usually what you see at Walmart or Target for like $30.00- $40.00. You really only want a high speed to buff out deep scratches and oxidation. When using the orbital use the cotton terry bonnets to apply and remove the wax. Use the wool for a final go over after all the wax is off. Also remember let the buffer to all the work. Do not press down or apply to much pressure to the buffer. Hold it gently grasshopper.

Oiy, please go visit the Autogeek.net forums before you start using an dual action buffer. Sorry, I take my detailing very seriously...to an OCD fault even.

hey jason... i detail cars for a living at carmax and work with buffers everyday... my advice to you is NOT to try using a high speed buffer on your car unless youve done it before. a proper buff on your entire car will make the finish look MUCH better.. but if you do it improperly, you will leave swirl marks!!!!

Yea, ive used zaino with an obesession in the past but being in Hawaii, the shipping cost doubles the zaino price!!! The reason I brought up the buffing thing is because ive got water marks on the hood. you can only see it at dusk at certain angles but its really pissing me off. I tried doing a lite wax job to it to no avail. Ok so, meguiars (which i have) ORBITAL buffer and terry cloth, got it, thanks fellas. Any more buffing detailing tips?

Merenza Intense Polish, follow by Final Polish II will take care of all your swirls and spots. Use a CCM Orange pad and a DA Orbital set on speed setting 6! Topit will a sealer.
