bose head unit cd player freezes

this truly sucks.

my last car was a vw passat. i loved it, but the kick ass stereo drove me insane. when it would get hot on long road trips, the cd player would just stop or spit out the cd. bulls***! not enough to have to fix it, but enough to suck.

i was so excited to have a newer stereo when i bought the ms3. little did i know how much i'd have to mess with it to get it somewhat decent sounding. and now, of course, my demon has found me. my in dash 6 disc super fancy bose headunit now randomly freezes a cd mid play. if i shut it off and wait 10 seconds, when i turn it on it will be fine.

wtf? am i destined to have marginally functional audio playback for the rest of my life? have any of you dealt with this successfully?

Nope, mine craps out by occasionly failing to read a CD, going into pout mode and spitting all the discs out, requiring random button hold sequences etc
then its fine for awhile
I tend to leave the same discs in, its when I change a disc that I run the risk of a meltdown

be thankful you can get it to come back with a power cycle, and save for the caska

Best thing to do is get an ipod adapter and a cheap used ipod off Craigslist. It'll be cheaper than buying a new deck or paying for warranty work (and replacement) from the dealer. (I'm assuming your bumper-to-bumper is up)

ah, i've got the aux input and an ipod, so i'll be fine as far as music if the cd player craps out for good. it's just that i'm a music lover and have over 1,000 cds. it would be a supreme pain in my ass to start importing all of them to mp3 format so i can listen to what i like. aarrrghhh! freaking cd players.

that being said, thanks for the info. if anyone has a stock bose hu you'd like to sell, let me know.

@kvndoom- yeah, bumper to bumper is up. i actually did the bose mod that you either wrote up or added to and it sounds great. have you modded your stereo beyond that?

Yeah I haven't really posted much about my system, but I have changed a good bit back and forth since I got the car. Right now I've got

Alpine SPX Pro tweeters
MB Quart QM160 woofers (German made, pre-Maxxsonics)
Phoenix Gold RSDC12" in a sealed box to bring up the rear

Bridged Alpine PDX-F4 powering the front doors
PDX-M6 to the sub

I have gone through several sets of 6.5's in the door, and the MB Quart's I like the best so far. They aren't strong in upper bass, but their midrange reproduction is fantastic. Sometime in the spring I intend to buy a set of Hybrid Imagine 6.5's, because I hear they are amazing speakers that defy their 220 dollar price tag.

I know getting all your music into itunes would be a royal pain... My HU makes a weird "chirp" sound every 10-15 seconds when I play back MP3's on disc. But not normal music CD's or radio or anything else. But in order to get it looked at under warranty I'd probably have to rip out everything and put the stock amp and speakers back in (otherwise they will blame an obviously defective stock HU on my installed aftermarket gear). It's just not worth the hassle, so I'm gonna get an ipod and the adapter sometime next year.

do you not have anything driving the rear doors?
my issue is that there is no way i can put a sub in. i have 2 kids, go climbing, get groceries, mulch, etc, etc. so i need all my cargo space. i'm kinda stuck with the bose POS. i think what i hate most is the bose equilization. it just sounds s***. i like flat response, not pillowy bass and crackly highs. if there was some way to put in an amp that would power the bose set up with a flat response, i think i'd be happy.

ah well, still better than the stereo on my old 83 celica.

JL XD series, man. Tiny as hell and super efficient, so you could fit the amp under the driver seat easily. You could probably run the 4- or 5-channel on the power wires that feed the blose already. And JL amps have differential inputs so you don't have to worry about alternator noise.

There are some nice thin subs out there, so you could fit a real 8 or 10 under the front passenger seat without a lot of trouble.

I don't use rear fill speakers. Not that I'm against it, but I'm up front and my passengers never complain about not being able to hear sitting in the back, so it doesn't seem necessary.

If you're willing to dedicate the time, you can put together a stealth amp and sub up front and be a lot happier. Your options would be a 4-channel with rear bridged to a sub (2.1 channel), a straight up 4 channel just powering the doors (not a bad idea if you don't need a lot of bass thumping), or a 5 channel to run all the doors and your stealth sub. It takes time and planning (and money :(), but it's worth it!
