black smoke with hypertech tuner

alright, I have had my hypertech tuner for about a year now, and before that, I ran the Cobb AP stage 2 for over a year or so. My current mods:

-turbo xs downpipe
-turbo xs race-pipe with magnaflow high flow cat
-racing beat cat-back
-cobb sri
-medieval turbo inlet
-denso iridium 1-step colder plugs
-cx racing front mount intercooler
-hypertech-tuned

Whenever I am driving the car normal, or idle, I never have ANY smoke. However, when I punch the gas, it shoots out this cloud of black smoke right when I first hit it. Is this normal, or do I have an issue somewhere? It's been doing this for a long time, but it's pretty annoying at times when you hit boost and leave black clouds of smoke on cars behind you. I am just trying to figure out if maybe I have an issue somewhere with my mods, or maybe with my tune. I know that these cars running rich means they are running safe, but I just want to make sure there is no problems with my car.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

wild ass guess,....
you have partially burned charge <smoke> so, plugs might be getting iffy, or a dirty MAF might be shooting to much in.

I recently replaced the plugs after doing the Seafoam a little over a month ago, so it shouldn't be the plugs. As for the maf, maybe that is it, but I am unsure. Thank you for the response. Any other guesses guys?

Ummm....how much smoke are we talking about? Like a quick puff or the exhaust of an old diesel?

I drive conservatively for the most part (that is to say i dont go WOT everyday) and i expect to see some smoke whenever i do go WOT. I see some smoke upon the initial flooring of the pedal, but it goes away. I chalk that up to driving normally for X amount of time and thus running generally rich. So when you finally get to open the throttle everything starts freeing up, trims rapidly change, and it blows out excess soot and carbon

and this can happen wih any car, any engine, anytime you got WOT for the first time in a while. I dont worry about it in my car

Everytime i go WOT i get the same thing but i drive like oakland. I dont get on it everyday, heck maybe like once or twice a week, but when i do i get some smoke. And i chalk it up to running very rich as well.

Probably normal for a car that does not get regular WOT. Too much stop and go driving with your mods. Also make sure you have the right MAF calibration selected in Hypertech for your intake, although I doubt that is your problem. Consider checking with Chris at Hypertech regarding your mods. With both the FMIC and the downipipe catted low (in the racepipe) he may have some suggestions on possibly using a different MAF calibration.

I'm just thinking that you're running pig rich in a lot of stop and go driving, don't have a primary cat (I'm fully catless), have increased flow and you are dumping some unburned gasses out the exhaust when you suddenly go WOT after poking around mostly.

Maybe stop the granny driving and see if it clears up?

Hahaha
Walter Mathau. Had the answer
"carbon on the valves"

okay oakland, what you're describing is what I am having. I granny it to get optimal gas mileage going to and from work during the week, so I get on it every now and then. So you guys think I should be fine? and yes, quick puff of smoke like some diesel trucks. Not constant or anything.

Yea thats no biggie. Although its still important to give it a good "stretch" every so often. And by that i mean going WOT or redlining it (safely)

By doing this it will effectively clean out some deposites, help plugs go longer, etc.

I remember a story an instructor told me when he was a porsche tech about a woman who kept coming in with her 911 because it was stumbling and hesitating constantly. She kept fouling up her plugs because she would never go past the low rpms. When they told her to start gunning it more often to keep things in good working order she came in one last time....to trade it in. She tried to drive it hard once, and quickly realized it was too much powor for her to handle

i granny mine too, but there is at least one time a day when i really open up (always in 3rd), and i try my hardest to actual go to redline maybe once a month. Every other time im shifting before 4k and cruising around 2k

All these guys are on target with what is going on. Like MSMS3 pointed out, not having the cat in the downpipe is probably the main cause. We didn't experience any smoke issues with our test car under normal driving conditions, but it had the stock cats on it for most of our testing miles. No cats can have an effect on O2 sensor readings, causing them to react differently. This can explain what the other guys are saying about their cars smoking a bit when going to wide open throttle after extended part throttle cruising.

I dont get the reference

^^^okay....i was just making sure we werent talking about spaghetti when it was really linguini

Its acutally very on topic, similar to the poorsh granny
Funny movie, saw it in the theaters, and remembered the phrase when i read this thread
