I'm buying a new house, and will need to get a new car to drive to work (i work 4 miles form away now, and ride my bike to work). Thinking about a 1st gen DSM AWD turbo. What i want to know is are they any good for AutoX? I have a 2003.5 MSP but dont want to beat it up to much yet. Just thought the dsm would be a fun beater to tear up. Any info would be great thanks.

You won't tear up the MSP running at autox, even on the OEM Bridgestone tires. Just make sure to rotate them front to rear every event, and spray them down with water between runs when it's 80 degrees or above. I ran a full year of autox in street tire with my MSP and now have 22k miles on the Bridgestones and they still have another 10k miles in them. And the car is fine, no problems.

Your problem is finding a 1st gen DSM that isn't already beaten within an inch of it's life. I wouldn't get the DSM for autox, I beat them regularly with the MSP.

the DSM will break down from autoX well before the MSP will. you won't hurt your MSP by using it as it was meant to be.

I have to agree with these guys. If you are wanting to auto-x on the cheap, a DSM is not the way to go. IMO, their reliability is sub-par. Maybe you can find an old (AE86) Corrolla GTS, CRX/Civic, Miata (had to throw that one in there :D), etc.

if you're going to rely on it to get to work, don't buy any gen dsm. they're fun between garages, but they seem to like staying in the garage more than they do on the road. and auto-x isn't what they do, they go fast straight. if you wanted to build a drag car, a 1g awd dsm would be a good choice. i'd look for a crx if i were you
