AWR headers

Just talking with Anthony at AWR re: 4/2/1 headers and a couple of other things. Mentioned that some of us have had problems with the header rubbing the stock fan shroud and some guys have installed shallower aftermarket fans to correct the problem.

He says a small number of headers were built with outlet pipes cut to length for a different application and inadvertantly used for the Mazda header. Otherwise, they were built to Pro spec. The problem was caught and corrected after a few units had left the shop.

I'll be ordering one soon.

you should call him up and see if he will do an exchange or at least a fix up. anthony's a stand up guy. he's fixed people's problems here before with no hesitation. i think upsman has had very good experiences with the folks at awr.

Why the hell would they sell me one for another application?
Check my post. The outlet tubing that's welded to the head flange and then to the 90-degree bends was for a different application. All other dimensions are correct for a P5 from the outlet tubing on down.

Tony should be good about just sending one to ahead of you pulling the old one out.

Tony rocks man...good guy.

I wouldn't hesitate to call Tony about it...I would be more than willing to bet he would do something about it...He has always seemed like a very professional and personable guy...

Did he give any indication on why they reversed the primaries though? The older design had cylinders 2-3 in front of 1-4, then they seemed to reverse that...never really understood why, or was that part of the "mistake"?

Hi, Jamie. Didn't ask Tony about juxtaposition of the primaries. I looked at the pix of both types and also wonder what prompted the change. Not sure if it makes any difference. BTW, the longer outlet tubes had apparently been cut to length for a different engine and were inadvertently put on a small number of Pro mannies.

In our brief conversation, I asked him a few q's about cams on Touring cars. He said they're looking to offer 2.0L street I/E cams after the first of the year once enough time is available to pursue the issue. He's aware there's a market for 'em and few are available unless the occasional MazdaSpeed/JDM-ZE sticks surface. I'm looking forward to what might develop.

Did he say that all new sales of the AWR header are correct?...or could a buyer potentially still buy one?...that worries me, although I want a flex a lite fan anyway...Just don't want to be forced to purchase one...

Tony indicated all leaving the shop now were correct.

yes the old way (2-3 pipes out the front) was a better design as the gases from those pipes and the 1-4 pipes travelled closer to the same distance. now the 1-4 gases travel a fair bit further than the 2-3 gases before they merge. also the old setup had much better merge points for the primaries

According to Tony, the initial config was set up for the Touring Car engines which didn't have the thermostat in the stock position. If the race car config is used, it interferes with stock cooling plumbing.

still i would have much preferred the merge design of the racing headers :
