2002 Mazda Protege 5
k, so i've done some searches and what not but still have questions.
i have a 02' protege5. it has obx headers, CAI, b&m sport shifter, 2nd stock cat is still in but have 3'' piping straight back into MeganRacing muffler. what class would this be in if i do choose do do this? is this a pretty expensive sport and is there some tips on how to practice and what not? any other info/suggestions would also help. thanks.

i already checked out the scca.org page, so some other sites might be good.

You will be in to high of a class to be conpetetive at all... I thinks it's STS or SM...

you are in STS, and there is a sticky at the top of this forum that will answer many of your questions, and where questions like these could be posted.

^^^nice. i should ask them to write something about how there is no such thing as an "MP5." :)

FL, if the OBX header deletes the pre-cat, you are in STX.

no matter what class you're in, you won't be competitive at first anyway. the best way to get better is to get as much seat time as possible and ask a lot of questions. autoXers are generally a pretty friendly bunch and will usually go out of their way to help out a novice.

cost: well, it's relative. it's more expensive than scrapbooking, but it's dirt cheap as far as motorsports goes. the only thing i'd suggest (once you decide you want to keep with it) is a dedicated set of autoX wheels and tires. besides that, entry fees for each event are typically between $20 and $35. it can be as cheap or as expensive as you want.

another site you want to check out is sccaforums.com

ok. thanks i'll read up on those rules and look into tires and what not. so far the closest place is in central florida which is about 2hrs away i concluded.

I don`t know much about Protege 5s, but I have talked to some Protege 5 owners and they say there is such a thing as an MP5. I don`t know about that for sure, but I have seen many MP5 badges on Mazda Protege 5s. They must have just ordered them all from someone on a forum or bought `em at Auto Zone, eh? Check on the Protege 5 forum, LOT of people call `em MP5. But, disbelieve all you want. I implore you to email Mazda`s enthusiast customer service yourself. So, I believe I AM correct also in sayin that there is such a thing as an MP5 but I`m not as sure as I am about the MPS thing. Why don`t you gather some info. first?

1. yes, those badges were made up by someone on one of the forums.

2. according to mazda motorsports, there is no official "MP5" designation. i asked them when i was trying to read the (not great) scans of the parts catalogs that are available to members. the model designation read either "MPS" or "MP5". the answer i received stated that the model was "MPS," for "Mazda Performance Series," which signified the MP3 and Mazdaspeed Protege suspensions. the reply also confirmed for me that the P5 and ES models share the same suspension (designated the "hard suspension" by the catalog). the reply futher stated that while many Protege5 owners call their car the "MP5," Mazda uses no such actual model designation.

so you see, i did gather some information, from a source more credible than "some Protege5 owners." :)

i believe people, at least at first, bought those 'MP5' badges for their P5's when they had swapped ECUs with an MP3, Giving them more power, like an mp3, but with a 5 door. I'm not arguing against what mazda said, just saying what it seems like people do.

Alright, well like I said I don`t know much about Protege 5s. However, email Mazda again and ask them, "Would the MAZDASPEED Protege be correctly listed as MSP or MPS?" Mazda did not make up the acronym MSP, people with MAZDASPEED Proteges made up MSP cause it made sense. The MAZDASPEED 6 I guess would be something like MPS 6 or MS6 or something. But, the MAZDASPEED Protege is simply MPS.

If MPS stands for "Mazda Performance Series" I dont understand how you can think that that is the correct designation for the MSP. I guess you could specifiy and say the MPS Protege, but if you refer to it simply as the MPS, wouldn't you also be reffering to the MP3, MS Miata, and MS 6? MPS, by definition (Mazda Performance SERIES) can not be the correct designation for a single car.

I`ve been asked this before (of course) and I`ll tell you what I tell everyone who asks that; I don`t know why it`s that way, I didn`t make it up. I just go by what I was told by Mazda. I understand what you`re saying though.

The model name is "Mazdaspeed Protege".
"MPS" as used by Mazda refers to the Mazda Performance Series. That abbreviation appears in the Protege parts catalogs when referring to the suspension components used in the MP3 and the Mazdaspeed Protege. The "MPS" designation has also been used for concept vehicles such as the MPS Miata concepts in Japan and the US that preceded the release of the Mazdaspeed Miata.

"MSP" and "MP5" are abbreviations used by owners and fans to stand for "MazdaSpeed Protege" and "Mazda Protege 5". They're not official, simply useful. As far as I know, there is not an abbreviation that is officially sanctioned by Mazda, and I don't know why it would matter if there were one.

I originally only put in my sig., "The official abbreviation for MAZDASPEED Protege is MPS not MSP." And that was all I had there. I put it there just because I thought it would be interesting for people to know that MSP was really not anything official and know what it really was. I asked Mazda before I put that there, "What would the MAZDASPEED Protege be correctly listed as?" And they responded. I then asked again after I changed my sig. to put the second response email in my sig. SO, in short, I just thought it would be something interesting and I got all kinds of poo talkin` from people who didn`t even know for sure, so I put the response in my sig. and I just get a little less poo talkin. I tell everyone to email Mazda themselves, because they will get the same response. As far as all the other MAZDASPEED vehicles they do carry the MPS designation, but I don`t believe they would be simply known as MPS. I in fact will send Mazda an email right this second and post it, it would be interesting to know. Thank you for not being demeaning and voracious, by the way.
