April / May 2009 US Mazda5 Sales

Sales of the 5 for April 2009 in Canada was 959, not bad for a country with 10% of the US's population. :) But down from 1735 in April 2008.

Considering they spent a boatload advertising the new Mazda6 only to see sales tank... while spending virtually nothing to advertise the Mazda5 and seeing sales hold up quite well... I don't think you have to worry too much.

But I think there is pressure on Mazda to get the next Mazda5 remodel right. The current model, although good, is really due for a redesign.

I have NEVER seen a Mazda5 add. Mazda 6 and now the new 3 adds are on the TV every other commercial.

Mazda doesn't have a big advertising budget like Toyota. They tend to advertise when they release a new model. The Mazda 6 was heavily advertised last year with the new redesign. This year it is the Mazda3. About 3 years ago there was some Mazda5 ads when it was finally brought over to N. America but most of us probably didn't own or even know about the 5 back then... I didn't even know about the 5 until I practically bought it.

May 09 Mazda5 sales: 1197

Mazda cars (including the 5) did very poorly in May 09. Right around -40% in DSR for Mazda3,5, & 6. Mazda5 is back around the 1200 sales level (1197), down from 2072 in May 08. This is still somewhat supportable, but the crash in both the Mazda3 (to 7500 from 12788) & Mazda6 (to 2689) really hurts.

Strange thing is there are non to be had. I was at my dealership yesterday and they had 1. Said it would be a couple weeks before they saw more. Maybe Mazda is selling what they import and are not hurt by it because no one is holding inventory... That is how the 3 was in 07-08.

I don't think the numbers will really show any improvement until after the summer. It was near the end of the summer/beginning of Fall 2008 when the car market began to crash. Up until that point Mazdas were selling at a decent clip.

But still...Only 1200 Mazda5's sold in the entire month of May??? Hopefully that is just one month blip... or it could be that the dollar is so low that they are just not exporting as many.

There are two things working against the Mazda5 right now:

a. Reduced manufacturer support ($500 cash back / 0.9% APR for 36 months vs. $1000 cash back / 0% APR for 36 months / no payments for 90 days*); and

b. The "cash for clunkers" legislation which may provide $3,500 or so if you turn in an old car when you buy a more fuel efficient vehicle (like the Mazda5). If I had an older car that wasn't worth that much I would not be buying a new car right now - I'd be waiting to see what comes out of the Cash for Clunkers legislation, plus to see if the '10 model offers substancial improvements.

* $1,000 cash back / 0% APR for 36 months / 90 days no payments was the manufacturer incentive for February and March '09 (United States).

Are these US sales figures or North American wide sales figures?

These are North America figures:
"Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported May 2009 sales of 16,718, down 40.1 percent versus May of 2008, and down 37.9 percent on a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis. Overall, total yearly sales are reported at 86,652, down 33.0 percent compared to 2008, or 32.0 percent on a DSR basis. ...
Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) reported sales of 1,183, down 31 percent over May of 2008. Sales for the all-new MAZDA6 were up 22 percent and showed its best May ever. Mazda Canada Inc. (MCI) sold 8,009 units, down 17.2 percent compared to last May.
Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario; in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City; and in Puerto Rico by Mazda de Puerto Rico in San Juan."

May 2009 US Mazda Sales

[Here's the monthly sales report I've been doing, it just adds the historical monthly sales from 2007 to 2009]

North America Mazda released their May 2009 US sales data.

It wasn't a great month. In May 2009 1,197 Mazda5s were sold, down 42.2% from May 2008.

For comparision 7,500 Mazda3s were sold in April. Mazda sales overall were down 37.9%.

Here's the data I have gathered from 2007 to the present.

I'd say "a" is probably a bigger factor. It's hard to sell a car these days without good incentives.

These are North America figures:

I don't think so. The breakdown is US numbers, I think. I base this on two things:

  1. A spreadsheet I received from NA Mazda that implied they were US numbers, that I vaguely remember
  2. If the break down numbers *are* North American numbers, then they sold 16,718 cars in North America, 8,009 units in Canada, and 1,183 units in Mexico. Leaving 7,522 units to be sold in the US. While the Canadians are quite sensible when compared to Americans :-), we do out number them 10 to 1, and I doubt that one sees 10 times the Mazdas on the road in Canada than the US.

The PR I saw is vague and inconsistent. It says,
"Mazda North American Operations - May 2009
Month-To-Date Year-To-Date"
------------- ------------
This seems to imply the numbers are for NA

It also notes "Domestic" vs "import" (suggesting US Market).

But, I agree - 7k US sales seems too small. (but still not good if it's just 2x Canadian sales).

I'll merge these 2 for the moment to avoid confusion. I also changed the thread title a little (boom01)

Mazdas are everywhere in Canada, especially the 3 and the previous 6 (the new 6 has been a bit of a flop so far even here), heck I see about 5 to 10 Mazda 5s a day. I wonder if it's some kind of stigma... my US based (Washington State) Toyota club friends blasted me for getting a Ford disguised as a Japanese car, while in Canada the Ford-Mazda affiliation (nor the Ford-Volvo affiliation) is not well known although the Focus was a hot seller earlier this decade.

I know what would kick M5 sales: a diesel release here. It would (again) make it a class of its own, and provide a great alternative to the Jetta. I know they've done an M5 diesel, but I also am aware that it would need to be cleaned up for NADM.
