Apple CarPlay crashing?

Has anyone else been having issues with CarPlay crashing the infotainment system? 2019 cx-5

Yes, happening to me since upgrading to iOS 18.0 (and now 18.1). Seems when I initiate a message to someone from the car it crashes after disabling input. I was looking at upgrading my firmware to see if that helped. I have a 2018 CX-9.

It's frustrating because I rely on Maps, but if I get a call while using it, the infotainment system crashes. The same thing happens if I try to use Siri.

Not crashing here but no longer defaults to last song screen itunes. Music plays fine and I'm hard wired with Apple lightning-usb cable to the system. However came here to see if others had issues (apparently) since 18.1 update. I know I'm behind on my NA firmware (no time but not paying Mazda $400 to update). I have 2017 CX-5

It's def unstable and I'm unsure whether it's a Carplay issue or Apple did something to break the integration with old Carplay interfaces like in the older Mazdas. I'm going to try the firmware upgrade (which is free) and let you know.

Have you done a reset on your phone?

After every iOS update I reset both my iPhone and iPad. Clears out old system files that can cause operating issues. Worht a try anyway!

I bought a new phone, restored from backup. You don't mean reset and erase data, right?
No, I mean do whats often called a “forced restart”.

The procedure depends on what model phone you have.

On earlier ones you start with the phone on, and press and hold the power and home button at the same time, continue to hold them down until the phone turns off and until the apple symbol comes onto the screen. Then the phone starts up normally.

Later iPhones like my 15 the procedure is

Press and quickly release the Volume up button > press and quickly release the Volume down button > press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

So just search “forced restart iphone” and your model and you will find the procedure. It doesnt erase anything, just reboots it.

My 2023 turbo started having issues with car play disconnecting as well. I thought it was a bad cord or plug, but I can see now that this is software related. Hoping there’s a fix for it soon!

Unfortunately, I’ve tried everything, even silly workarounds posted in the Apple forums. Nothing worked. I was hoping 18.1 would fix it, yet the same crashing issues persist. I’m hoping a firmware update (74) on the infotainment system does the trick.

I updated the infotainment system from 70 to 74, and so far, no issues/crashing. I’m going to test it out a bit more.

I’m getting the “now playing” screen freezing on a track once in a while, even though the next track is already playing. But, it’s an apple glitch as I saw it happening when just playing apple music on my iPhone, no CarPlay involved. I got an update last night to 18.1. Maybe they fixed it. I have never got an error message like in the original post. I always suspect the cord and the worn iphone port but I guess thats not always the case.

The firmware upgrade is really easy as long as you read the instructions thoroughly before and during the process. I've done 3 Mazdas now from various 59.X versions directly up to 74 with no issues.

Update (literally) - I updated the vehicle firmware to the latest (74.x.x.x). Takes about 20 mins and so far no issue. CarPlay has not crashed. It's wired connection to an iPhone 16 Max Plus - USB-A (from the vehicle) to USB-C to the phone. I have a 2018 Mazda CX-9.

Cautiously optimistic - will update in a week or so.

Well it's been four days and no crashes. CarPlay still is a bit squirrely and the new AI Siri seems to not "hear" as well as the previous version. It doesn't understand "Nope" so you have to say "NO!". But it's not crashing, so maybe that is the solution -> upgrade your CX-9 firmware.
