Who has put in a android stereo unit with relative success ? & what model / brand are people using .

Most of them seem............. to be plug in and play. And claim to have some sort of Camera & Steering wheel control compatibility.

What are some that work? I'm not in to doing soldering or having to relay new wires ,fuses or anything overly technical.

I put an appradio 3 by pioneer. By the HDMI input I plugged an android tv stick. Touches are passed from headunit to stick by appradio unchained app by Bluetooth.
Appradio3 300usd. TV stick (quad core) 40usd. Rp4-mz11 interface for swc retention (90usd)

Ikerg, thank you for the idea. Are you able to pair and connect your actual smartphone via BT to that setup?

I have my i9300 (s3) paired to the HU and working as hands free simultaneously as the android stick is paired to the HU

Rearview camera (OEM) working without any issue.
I did the installation... You need a 12v to 6v stepdown and a video yellow plug to solder 2 cables....

With Appradio, can you listen to the radio or BT music while having navigation from the tv stick?

CAN bus on most cars isn't encrypted now... (AFAIK you basically have root access w/o password). If someone could come up with an app to address config of the car custom settings via OBD2 port it would basically make a 3rd party radio install a no-con option outside of warranty.

Yes. It has a MIXER option to superpose audio from two sources:
Appmode+Bluetooth
appmode+radio
...
