2014 Mazda 3 S
Hey guys! I went for the 2014 s touring a little while back- what an amazing car thus far.. Unfortunately a couple of days ago myself, and three passengers took off down the street with the parking handle pulled up- more than half way.. We traveled at about 35MPH for a little less than a mile before I realized it was on- put the handle back down and kept driving for a couple more miles. (I was on an incline originally and put the brake on just enough the stop the car from rolling back, but simply forgot to take it off. The car felt normal while I backed out of the drive way and pulled off and didn't notice). I'm sure if my wheels were locked I would have obviously noticed that.

There was still a definite burning metal smell several minutes after I had turned the brake OFF and parked again.

So, what's the verdict here? To my own eyes, the smaller back rotors might appear slightly darker and smoother than the front- it's hard for me to tell- I'm not a certified mechanic.

So far I have had a Mazda mechanic visually inspect the rotors (while the car was parked with the wheels on- didn't lift it or take tires off) which he claimed looked fine, and test the parking brake which he deemed normal.

My real concern is for the drivetrain components (tranny, engine, etc.) receiving wear/damage since I had a full car load as well. Sometimes it feels like the rev-up of the engine through the first couple gears is a little slow.. It could be my imagination.

Should I stop being paranoid? Could this even do anything to anything aside from the brakes? I have an AT.

Stop worrying.

Maybe have the rear brakes serviced at the next oil change (ie. get the slider spins re lubed).

The transmission should be fine, and axels and hub assemblys are fine everything should be. Just make sure to.let the car warm.up.and come to a complete stop and wait till you can tell.the cars in gear. Save your transmission and car by a hell.of alot... check the rotors for any groves, run your finger along them.when the car is.cooled down. You.may need new.rotors and pads maybe but probley not. And do.the work.your self unless your under warrenti

+1

I don't know if the e-brake is a separate drum brake setup or uses the discs. Most use a separate drum brake. Regardless, have it checked at the next service.

Thanks guys... I have a service due in about 4,000 miles so I'll have them focus on the rear when I'm there... I have only had the car a couple weeks so I'm more concerned about the drive train receiving wear from this.. I just need to keep hearing that there's no effect towards the drive train or gears on my auto trans from doing this and I'll keep feeling better about it. I tend to develop OCD after new car purchases.

My best friend did that to my RX-8 when I let him drive it shortly after I bought it. I didn't notice, either, that he had left the parking brake on. Oops. Almost 5 years later and some 35,000 miles, still no harm done that I can tell, and the car still hasn't gone through a set of brake pads, yet.

Good to know... How long/fast were you guys riding on it for? Any smell? Had mine not smelled the way they did I wouldn't be worried up to this point.

It was around-town driving, a few miles, probably up to about 40 or 45 mph. Yes, we did notice a bit of a smell. I can't remember if that's what clued us in, or if he didn't notice until we parked.

Wasn't the brake light on?
I think your car is just fine; don't worry about it. Now if you drove around for a week, that's be a different story.

ahhhh this is one of the safety features mazda forgot about on the newer cars, we had older cars before and all of them beeps, every time the E-break is on, while your rolling/crusing
