Agressive launch - loud bang/pop sound... WTF???

Just what the title says. I wanted to have a little fun, I disabled the traction control and did a semi agressive launch. Nothing too bad, revved to like 2500 rpm and slipped the clutch a little to get the wheels spinning than dropped it.

Soon as I dropped it, I heard this VERY loud pop/bang sound from the front of the car. I imediately pulled over and had a look under the hood. First thing I thought was motor mounts as I've heard the stories about dropping engines....

Top mount seemed fine. I tried putting a LOT of force on the engine to rock it back and forth and it wouldnt' budge, felt very solidly in place. So I dont' think it was a mount. Test drove the car around the block a few times, increasing speed each time, and all seemed well.

if I had to guess or describe the sound, I would guess something like a motor mount bolt snapping or an axle/u-joint/half shaft snapping... it was that loud.

There was no sound after the initial pop, like anything banging around or falling, and I saw no parts dropped on the ground (nailbyt) heheh but seriously, so far the car seems fine.

Any idea what this sound might have been???????

at least three threads on this. Its wheel hop.

sorry man, I am looking through threads right now actually and did find a couple referring to 'wheel hop clunk'.

I never would have thought that's what it was I mean it was LOUD as hell, definately more of a bang than a clunk. It really sounded like it broke expensive parts. Scared the hell out of my friend in the car too.

I know i have had this at least once. Scared the s*** outta me too. I think its the LSD slamming together or something. Best thing for a fix would prob be a motor mount and no more dropping the clutch.

It has helped. :)

no clutch drops would suck. Only other way to get a good launch is clutch slip and that adds too much wear on the clutch IMO.

well... then again after that bang I probably won't have the balls to do it again any time soon :P

I replied in another thread already but was DSC off? If it wasn't it could cause exactly what you're describing. I've done multiple 2500+ rpm fast but controlled clutch 'dumps' and have only ever got a bang when dsc was on. I've had some wheelhop too but that's rare. Wheelhop is more like a 'thud-thud-thud-thud' sound though.

Same thing happened to me also.It sounded nothing like wheelhop to me.I thought I broke something and the first thing I thouhgt was the motor mount just like you.
I still dont know what it was but now it seems my turbo or BOV or something else is making some weird sounds.
I take it in on Mon..

Common issue from the very first model year. Caused by hard parts banging together due to wheel/motor hop, soft motor mounts and liquid-filled control arm bushings.
Adding the AWR rear mount is the only way to minimize it last I heard. It never really goes away entirely.

What helps some is to rev it up higher before you dump the clutch. The tires break free sooner and don't have as much of a chance to hop before spinning.

yeah DSC was off. and it was a loud bang. It did FEEL like wheelhop for a split second.

It's okay... won't drop the clutch like that again. Didn't buy the thing to do burnouts, anyways.
