A PROBLEM I NEED EVERYONE TO CHECK

OK friday night i did my typical routine work, gym, then home. I got ready to go out and left my house about a 1/4 mile don the street my car felt like sh*t. It wouldnt turn right, it was sloppy like a tire was flat. So i pulled over and got out:

I walked aroung to the back of the car and found the passenger rear tire flat i ran my hand around the tire to see what happened and the metal from inside the tire stuck into my fingers. This was odd(no sh*t). So i got my flashlight and looked at the tires from under the rear end. I saw that both of the inside of the rear tires were worn right through tire and metal.

After changing the flat one i noticed that the wear happened at an angle (like a camber problem) it was worn to about 75% of the contact area. The outside of the tire still looked fine so it was unnoticable from a simple glance.

This is a serious problem and i hope its not a common one but i need everyone to check if they have anything similar to this.

I have 9000 miles on the car and had the rims off to clean them 2000 miles ago. During the last 2000 miles the only real change was the weather getting alot colder. Maybe these tires cant handle the cold but i cant explain it. Its going to the dealership on Monday.

Please respond
thanks

I doubt this could cause so much of a problem, but were your tires inflated to the right pressure? You can get odd wear if they are not at the right pressure. Have you checked them recently?

I hit 9300 miles today and I've had no such problem.. so I don't know.. I thought my tires might have been runnin' kinda funny today, but I'm paranoid like that. Also, when do you get your tires rotated and balanced? I think the manual says like.. we're supposed to every 3700 miles..

I had this happen on some Dunlops I had on my Civic. Checked tires, rotated and balanced, and noticed no unusual or "angled" wear. Within 2 months the inside of the fronts was down to the metal belts, like you said, at an angle, like a camber problem. An alignment showed minimal negative camber, not NEARLY enough to cause that kind of wear that quick. This happened after winter, so weather was actually getting warmer. (so I doubt it's a weather issue). The only thing I can think of is high speed handling, like freeway on-ramps and the like, is very detrimental to Dunlop tires. With the nicer spring weather I was running my car harder around turns and curves (40 mph off-ramps at 70+mph, etc.). Sound familiar Greer? be honest, at least to us here. You can BS the hell out of the dealership to get the tires warrantied!!! ;)

Not to imply anything, but you do know that the tires are one directional right?

i just checked mine, i have 14,000 miles on my dunlops and they have alot of tread left, and no uneven where. it has to be a chamber problem cause if it was low PSI both outside side of the tire would be screwed up, over inflated and the center would be screwed up.

i got a flat at 2000 miles and i called dunlop and complained and they split the cost of the tire with me. i called the dealer and they said they couldnt help i had to go through dunlop so i called them and after about 3 calls i got them to split the cost. make sure you ask to speak with a manager.

I have about 4000 miles on my car and the tires look perfect. I think I will check the pressure though, as it has gotten quite cold here (CT).

poor tire inflation + cornering will do this to your tires. weather plays a very small role in this. If you read your owners manual it tells you to check your tire pressures weekly!!! camber will not wear tires like this, it only produces around 25% of tire wear at the most. Toe is the alignment angle that produces 70-80% of tire wear! tires don't just magically wear through in 2000 miles when they were fine before!

Hey Greer, I rotated my tires again today and noticed that the front tires had the exact problem you described. It's not a air pressure issue w/ me, as i check them at least once a week to make sure they are at 32 psi in the front and 29 psi in the back.

It's not a cornering issue because I rarely take corners hard. Any ideas? What did you do to solve your problem?

Okay, went to the mazda dealer today and the service guru there said he thinks it's a negative camber problem. He's going to do a 4 wheel alignment next week to see if that's the problem.
