89 safe compare to 91 Octane?

I just found out that i should be pumping 91 octane on this car(boom01). i've been putting 87 (regular) for the past year(braindead. But all i see in gas stations in Long Island NY is 87 89 93. If i pump 89 instead of 91 would i still get the same positive results i want? what effing stations have 91 octane?

What? How did you own this car for a year not knowing that? It says it in the manual, the quick guide, and right on the fuel door! Your car actually ran decent for a year with 87? Use the 93.

How do you sleep at night???(nailbyt)

The car ran perfect... seriously... For some reason i got it stuck in my head that 87 was fine, and since my car felt fine i didn't give it a second thought. so what should i do?

Use the 93. If nothing else, think of it as an investment. The higher the octane, the better high performance vehicles run anyway.

Ooh Its okay... since you said no offense i wont take it as an insult...
The can ran great. I was getting 300 miles with a full tank.(city/highway).

I think that Mazda meant to say 91 octane or higher. Lots of places only have 93.

The higher the octane, the moar resistant to pre-ignition caused by high compression (higher temp). Remember, the moar you compress a gas, the higher the temperature of that gas gets. This is how diesels run, from compression induced ignition.

The manual say use a minimum of 91 octane. The reason it says "minimum" is because you cannot get 93 everywhere in the country. Here in NY, 93 is ubiquitous, so that is what I use and recommend you use.

I make it a point to go to gas stations that sell 93 instead of 91. It is usually the same price.

yea out here in cali you cant find 93 really, theres a few spots but not that many

use 93, I wish I could =(

I dont see why they dont either....Cali is all about 'emissions regulation', isnt 93 is supposed to burn cleaner than 87?

No. Octane rating has nothing to do with burning cleaner. In fact, running high octane gas in a car that wasn't tuned for it will burn slower and be less efficient. More octane just resists predetonation in higher performance engines that have high compression, forced induction and/or are tuned with aggressive fuel/timing maps.
