3600mi road trip report....

Well we just got back from a road trip from Boise to KC thru SLC and Denver, then up to Omaha and back through Wyoming. I really got a good chance to feel out the rig all around and I'm still very happy with the purchase. I did take note of a few things Mazda could improve on for the next model tho. Gas mileage ranged from 27mpg to 43mpg, comfort was phenomenal and functionality off the charts of joy, especially with a 5mo old. My wife, 5mo old and I were always comfortable and able to load the back up with a lot of stuff with room to see out still. I can see why peeps have mentioned the need for a 5th gear, at 78mph she's bout tapping 3400rpm, then when the cruise kicks you into 3rd to get up a hill your pushing redline before you know it. The cruise was pretty intelligent tho, subjectively speaking, it would overshoot the setpoint going up a hill just before upshifting to 4th so it wouldn't keep bouncing gears. It would also maintain speed very well going downhill... very minimal creep. As for the armrest thing, I found folding up a pillow and wedging it between the door and the seat worked great in the back row. I really wish Mazda would've put speakers in the back doors tho, so be careful stacking the back to not block the only back speakers.

Gas Mileage vs Speed:

58mph = 40-43mpg (had some bad weather going thru Wyoming, 50-65mph)
68mph = 35mpg
73mph = 32mpg
78mph = 27mpg
73mph downhill from Denver CO to Hayes KS = 40mpg

Hope this data is useful.

That's impressive. With the automatic, even.

Even though auto has more internal friction, it revs a little less at top gear.

40 MPG is very impressive. I'll try stay in 65 MPH the next trip for better MPG.
