205/45/17 or 215/40/17 on 05 Mazda 3 wheels for a P5

Hey Everybody,

I recently picked up a MP5 as a second car. So to spurs the old girl up a bit, I got my hands on some stock 05 Mazda 3 GT 17" rims cheap cheap (shady). I've searched the forum and of course Google to find out some relevant tire size information. Although I believe I have a good sense of what size I should get, I wanted to put the feelers out to see what you guys are using for your MP5's.

It's a daily driver so I won't be lowering it or doing any additional suspension modifications/upgrades. I'm looking at two different tires at the moment, both from Hankook.

  • Hankook Ventus S1 noble2
  • Hankook Ventus V2 Concept2

So with that being said, what's the best size for the above mentioned rims? I keep seeing some folks using 205/45/17 while others have 215/40/17. Let me know what you think the best choice of tire would be and size.

Circumference of the 215/40-17 tire is closer to stock 195/50-16 than the other one.
 
I'm not sure about that, isn't the MSP rims a bit wider like a 7.0 where these Mazda 3 rims are 6.5. Tire Rack is saying a 205/45/17 is the best application for a MP5. So now I'm really confused because some of you are running a 215/45/17 but not necessarily on a stock 17" Mazda 3 rim.

Doesn't seem confusing to me. Could be that I've used this before. Enter OEM tire size on the left, and whatever size your considering on the right and your done. Shows you how the tires would look mounted on the rim and the readout at the bottom shows you faster or slower you would he going with the new tire size.

Personally I would not trust the 1010 site's except for overall diameter. If the calculator does not take into account width and backspacing, it isn't much help for true fitment.

I am currently running this set up on my P5. Stock 06 MZ3 wheels with 215/45/17 no issues with fit on stock suspension. I have no clue about how much the speedo is off though.

Ah....your just the man I want insight from then. Any rubbing issues? What's the clearance from the strut as that seems to be what matters the most when picking a tire? What tires did you go with?

You're going about 2.5 MPH faster than what your speedo says.

The clearance is good no issues. I bought General Altimax.

I'm good then. I am too old to go more than 5 mph over the speed limit anyway, so 7.5 should keep me from getting a ticket.
