2023 CX-5 Premium Plus Transmission Issue

I have had an ongoing issue with the transmission of my 2023 CX-5 Premium Plus (middle trim). It feels like the car stays in lower gear longer than necessary. I used to drive stick, and the drive feels like when you stay in a lower gear to get more power. It's as if the car hesitates longer before it shifts up. It also lurches occasionally. For example, when going from reverse to drive, it'll jerk forward sometimes. I didn't think this was a big deal. I just assumed that all Mazdas were like this. I was a bit disappointed at first because I have a 2018 CRV, which is smoother.

However, I recently got into a slight fender bender and the car was in the autobody shop. I ended up borrowing my mother-in-law's 2024 CX-5 S Preferred (base trim) for an entire week. I love her car! I was shocked to find the drive for her car was substantially smoother. It's like night and day. It doesn't have that feel of being in lower gear all the time. And, when I'm on the highway, I feel like I don't have to continually hold down the gas pedal to keep the car moving forward. This last part might just be in my head; I'm not sure.

Right now, I am extremely jealous of her car. It's a lower trim but I'd rather have her car due to how much smoother her ride is. (Also, the remote entry on my car doesn't work half the time while it works perfectly for her.)

I intend to bring my car to a transmission place, but I was wondering if there is anything specific I should have them look for?

Or is this something I just have to accept as part of the manufacturing process? (I used to think that all cars of the same make were the same, but, from now on, I'm going to really test drive the car before buying.)

What he said ^^^^ It's a year old. That's what warranties are for…And, BTW, what you describe is not normal.

Take it to the dealer. It may be as simple as a transmission relearn. You could try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for about 30 minutes, then reconnect and see how it drives.

Why don't you bring it to the dealer. It should still be in warranty, right?

I guess you're right. I just don't have a lot of faith in dealers honoring warranties. I tried to bring my car to fix the remote entry and they just gave me the run around. A complete waste of time.

I'll definitely do that. Thanks.
Just to add, that is not the full procedure to reset the TCM.

Refer to this:

Note, when he says you need to hold the brake, you need to press pretty hard on it.

If that does not do the trick, take it to the dealer.

Once is a while, you need to take your vehicle out for an exercise.
Not kidding. Rev it up to at least 4k or 5k safely.

If you keep babying the car, the transmission gets lazy.... thanks to transmission's grade logic that learns from your driving.

Similar symptoms on my 2020 and I took it to the dealer, they were able to reproduce the problem and replaced the transmission under warranty.
