2021 CX-5 Service due in 3600 miles indicator showing when starting

:
2016 Mazda CX-5 Sport & 2010 Toyota Corolla LE
So, my brother bought a 2021 CX-5 sport 2.5NA with about 19,150 miles at end of March 2024 from a Honda dealership. The oil change was done by the dealership on 2/29/2024 at 19,090 miles.

He drives a few miles a day and not much and now has 20,556 miles on the car. When he starts the car it shows on the cluster, that service is due in 3600 miles. He has only driven about 1466 miles so far, why would he see that so early?

Because the Honda dealership didn't reset the service counter when they changed the oil.

See the owner's manual for details.

Should be able to toggle the warning so it doesn't appear until the mileage gets closer.
There's a bug in my 19's infotainment software where every once in awhile the "Service due" warning will appear.
I just press the info button and it goes away only to show up again in a week or two or three.
No biggie.

3600+1400=5000

Checks out.
Yes, but you can also drive up to 10k a year or yearly oil changes on these models from what I understand.

Or does the onboard computer figure out driving style, etc. and determine the estimated time left in miles and length for oil change?

Someone set it to 5k. They were smart, as that's when it should be changed, not 10k.

Thats fine to change it 5k, and that's when he'll do his next oil change. But the interval can be one year if you only drive about 5k miles a year?

Yup. I do 12 months. In fact mine is coming up in 30 days. I bought a 3-pack of 5 qt jugs last year to get bulk pricing, so my DIY oil change with premium oil costs me $39.

Yeah, so on my 2016 CX-5 sport, I get the oil change done at six months and 5k.

I would not go 10k, oil is cheap, engines not so much.

Also, it doesn't work like the Honda maint/minder, it's mostly mileage, not sure if it tracks time so if you're close to 12 months it will warn you.

absolutely do not tell him to go 10k miles between oil changes. Especially while he still has the factory powertrain warranty. 7500 mi or 1 year for normal driving; 5000 mi for severe

newer models that have been updated recently (Mazda 3, CX-30/50) are the ones that say 10k miles/12 months in the maintenance schedule with the same engine. This hasn't made its way to the CX5s yet

Even for the "severe" schedule? Wow.
