2016 cx5 oil burn

My partner has a 2016 Mazda cx5 touring AWD with about 100k miles on the car. I did an oil change at 93k miles and just did another at 100k. I did a transmission drain and fill at 93k with an oil change. I filled it with a full 5qt container and did another oil change and transmission drain and fill now. (Wasn’t sure if any drain and fill was done before so decided to just do another one now.)

Anyways the problem is that I measured the amount of oil coming out this oil change noticed only about 3qts of oil came out. Is this amount of burn normal? The oil was pretty sludgy. We used penzoil ultra platinum 0-20. Decided to go with Mobil 1 extended performance 0-20 for this round. Thinking of doing another oil change at 5k miles next time.

no, not normal at all... is this a used car? If so, previous owner might've neglected oil changes and/or used cheap crap oil

burning half a quart in 5000 miles is pretty normal, but more than that isn't

I am not the first owner of our 2016 car. I drive in hilly areas; I do short trips; and lots of stop and go traffic around here. I change my oil every 3.7 - 4.4k miles and I burn about a half-quart to a quart. So if I extrapolate to 7k for a change I can see potentially burning 2. I am at about 168k miles.

That is not normal.
I have a 2016 Touring AWD and I've never had to add any oil between oil changes.

Did you account for the oil in the filter?

Note where the level is now on the dipstick and then check it every week and record it, see if it's actually using/burning oil.

Did you partner purchase this new or was it bought used and if so how many miles when purchased?

If you put in a 5 qt jug and a new filter some of the oil would go into the filter and then is there when you remove it, so consider that as well.
I usually try to change the oil before 5k.

The car is used. Bought around 60k miles and she’s always done oil changes at oil change places on time. I measured the oil before the oil change and it was right in the middle of the dip stick. Which is weird cuz only 3 quarts came out. I was accounting for the oil in the filter. It was closer to 2.75 qts. She doesn’t drive very hard either.

That’s a good plan. I put in 5 qts and I’ll measure it on the dipstick every week.

Wonder if PCV valve is clogged if no obvious leaks? This is part of the oil separator under the intake IIRC

the filter holds around half a quart of oil

these engines also drain oil back to the pan very slowly, so the usual practice of putting new oil in, starting it for a second, then checking the oil afterwards makes you easily overfill it

it could also be that it was under filled by the quick lube places... the spec calls for 4.2 quarts for the 2l engine and 4.5 quarts for the 2.5, but experience have shown that they usually drain out more than that and you end up putting in about half a quart more

doubt this has much to do with the oil burning, but almost every aftermarket oil filter do not have the correct pressure rating specs for these engines... best to stick to the mazda filters unless you go out of the way to find the correct aftermarket filter

like I said, if cheap crap oil was used before, it will definitely cause problems... modern engines like these are quite sensitive to the kind of oil used... these are expensive engines, so better not to cheap out on maintenance... most americans are pretty cheap when it comes to maintenance, so it won't be surprising finding issues on any used car lol

What is the level on your dip stick after sitting on a level spot over night? Checking that all the oil drained. If it's normal, I would check the oil weekly.

X2 on checking the PVC valve. If it had sludge in the oil, it could have failed closed. Any signs of oil leaks anywhere??

Our 24 CX5 T used oil during the break in period. I was surprised we added a quart every 5k mi. Then it just stopped using oil!

I let a tech change the oil in my diesel truck, it takes 3 gallons, the last oil change because the oil was contaminated from injector failure. He didn't drain all the oil. I removed over 2 quarts! I provided the oil and filter.

X2 on cheap oil and cheap oil filters at the quickie oil change places. Their oil filter are a joke and bulk oil is an unknow quantity. High quality oil and high quality oil filters are on my rides.

IF it's using oil consider treating the oil. I've had exceptional luck with HotShot Secret Stiction Eliminator. YES its used mostly in diesels with great success. I treated my 5.9 Cummins diesel first and it changed the sound and blow back went to zero. +275k mi and going for 500k!

Next I treated our 08 Honda Accord with 1/2 quart of Stiction Eliminator. It was using about a quart every 10K mi. Again, after treatment no oil usage between oil changes and it was noticeable peppier. FE went up 2 MPG as well. Like the diesel, HSS Stiction Eliminator cleaned out the sludge and build up between the piston rings and piston. The piston rings sealed better.

I'll treat our CX5 on 30K mi intervals with a 1/2 quart since my wife mostly drives the car on short trips around town.

If you thought your oil had sludge, consider an oil treatment and send a sample in for analysis. It costs about $15 to have the oil checked. I did the CX5 at 10k to have a base line.

Good Luck!
