2010 Mazda 5 Sport Vs Touring (which one should I buy)?

Hi Everyone.

I currently own a 3 and want to upgrade for my family and I'm trying to see if the 3K extra (at least in the MSRP quote) is worth it to get the Touring over the Sport...

What I want from the Touring is:

1. LED tail lights
2. Fog light

But I don't care about a moon roof, etc and the comparison from Madza's site:

http://mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pageParameter=modelsTrim&vehicleCode=MZ5

doesn't have that much different....I do wish the touring had the HID headlights, but you gotta buy the grand touring as you all know.

i'm wondering the after market upgrades would be better (but do I risk voiding the warranty?)... ultimately I know it's up to me and how much I want to spend, but am curious about your opinions.

Thanks guys!

:)

The fog lights look nice but they provide little functionality, and you can get LED tails from a junkyard. :) Plus you can easily put in HID kits in, the projectors headlamps hardly produce any glare. My two cents.

If there's a warranty issue, you can quickly swap back to stock if you're worried, although the LED tails would be an OE product.

thanks for the reply...yeah the 3K in the MSRP is pretty steep for just 2 items that i want. we'll see when i go back to the dealer again.

i'm definitely not a good driver at night (in terms of my vision, even with glasses), which is why I want bright headlights, hence the HID ones.

also thinking about getting a DVD player installed possibly in the ceiling, but does that cause a blind spot in the rear view mirror? the dealers are quoting about $1000 to do it after market which i'm not crazy about and it's tempting me to buy the DVD players in the headrest instead and just use the 12V connector

I'd save the money and get the headrest ones; cheaper and no potential vision blocking issues.

get an hid kit for 50 and you can probably buy the fogs yourself and install for around 300 or so if you buy them yourself. At least I think thats possible idk with the 2010s though. Led lights you could get new for like 500 i think so even then your saving money if you really want to buy all those options afterwords.

thanks...yeah, i think the Touring might be what I'm after based on re-doing the numbers with the auto transmission as it goes up again to about 19,700 for MSRP which is now getting close to the touring $$$

if I do buy a touring, I am hoping to walk out under $19,250 (with EVERYTHING included)..if not better than that...I'm in a state with high taxes as well... hopefully that's considered a good deal by you all.

Do you folks normally install a wireless back up camera as well your mazda 5? if so i'm curious which model folks like to use since there are so many choices. I think I need one because there are so many kids in my neighborhood and I dread thinking about me or my wife backing up on them since the 5 is much higher up than my current mazda 3

At least the Sport model has A/C with automatic climate control, a $1,295 option on the Canadian GS.

Also you still save $1,815 with a Sport and Auto vs. Touring. Don't upsell yourself, that's the salesperson's job lol. Mind you I'd get a GT with leather package myself lol but you seem like you just want no frills transportation and everything else would be a waste of money. You get automatic climate control, automatic lights, power everything except the seats (which you don't get even in the highest model), 6 speakers, airbags.

A backup camera is always a good idea. You can get that as part of the $1,815 you save getting the Sport, as well as the headrest DVD players.

Be sure to check the prices paid thread. People have been able to get Sport w/ Auto for as low as $17k OTD. If you're looking to spend $20k anyway and can get a Touring, why not, but I think you should think things carefully before you spend more money than you need to.

You can add fog lights to the sport from the dealer for $300. and the tail lights at least look similar now. The only thing i do not like about the sport is the lack of spoiler and side skirts. makes the 4 look funny to me. i also could care less about the sunroof. i have an 08 touring and rarely use it!

The main reason i would go for the sport would be for the manual transmission.

Edit: and headrest dvd units are cheap now. you can get removable, dual screen units for pretty cheap. it is like how portable gps units are. not worth the price to get factory units.

Yeah cool...my upper budget on the car is 20K as you can probably tell.

Based on all of your great suggestions...I guess what I really want is the

Mazda 5 sport (automatic) with:

1. HID headlights
2. LED tail lights
3. fog lights
4. DVD headrest player(s)
5. backup camera

of which all 5 can be done via after market addons/negotiations (especially #1 thru #3) as the last 2 I can buy on my own.

We had the budget to afford the "Grand touring" but the dealer didn't have any on the lot, and we needed to replace a totaled car ASAP. We looked around, and could have waited a few days for them to get one from another dealer, but we thought about it, and really didn't need any of the items of the upgrades, so we just went with a basic Sport.

Later on I may pick up and add on some stuff like the foglights, but its really just an around town transport, doesn't have to be fancy.

I'd only factor in the headrest DVDs if you opt for the black interior. The sand interior, which we have, doesn't match the premade headrest monitors. So if you're picky about that - like me - you'll want to budget for getting some custom made or reupholster the premade ones. BTW, katskinz has leather for about a grand for the 5. You could try tackling it or have someone else do it.

The only downside (if you can call it that) to all of these suggestions, is you can't finance these upgrades into the cost of the sport model. If you've got the cash, you'll save money, but be out the time/effort.

that was my suggestion too. some players out there have 2 portable monitors as well. much cheaper than actual headrest monitors. i will probably be looking for some of them in the near future.

The rear spoiler and side skirts can be added to the Sport, there are part of the ~$500 popular package which include the CD changer. As previously mentioned the fogs are a $300 dealer add on to the Sport. So really you are only missing out on the LED tails and they can be gotten for a few hundred from the scrap yard.
If you don't want the sun/moon roof why pay for it?
Good luck!

Go with the Touring, it is a better deal. The MSRP between is $2975 different, the listed different will be:

1. Halogen fog lights. - $115 each, wiring not included.
2. Power sliding-glass moonroof. - After market $800 - $1000
3. Side sill extensions. - ????
4. Rear liftgate spoiler. - $945.89 + Painting Cost
5. LED taillights. - $300 each.
6. Leather-wrapped steering wheel. - $600.
7. Leather-wrapped shift knob. - $208
8. In-dash 6-disc CD changer with 6 speakers. - $550.

*Price from onlinemazdaparts.com

As the previous post says, the spoiler, side sill extensions, and 6 disc changer as part of the $500 Popular Package. He's expressed no desire for the moonroof and I could personally do without the leather steering wheel and shift knob, there's nothing special about it.
