2002 Yellow Protege 5 , paint job below average?

My paint job is getting worse and worse. Mainly on the hood, roof, and rear hatch/bumper. Its lost its luster, and looks like crap.

i gave up on waxing, since the very first time I tried to wax it, I saw yellow paint on my applicator. Back then (2002) I contacted Mazda USA and Meguiars, and they said this was normal. Mazda USA said they mix the clearcoat with the paint on the yellow cars.

So does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to make my car looks better? Granted, since its bright yellow, it doesnt look bad from a distance, but up close you can tell its cloudy looking in certain areas.

I also have some chips on my hood from everyday rocks hitting it. SHould I just use the touchup paint, or should I do more?

A buddy of mine has a yellow one and all of his plastics were cloudy/fading. Compound fixed it.

Compound, any particular brand/kind?

I used the 3 step Meguiars system, Cleaner, Polish, Wax.

Did he see any yellow coming off?

I'll have to ask him about the exact compound, I'm not sure right now.

But I do remember yellow coming off, and he told me all the yellow P5's do that.

Is that because the yellow doesn't have mica chip in it?

The yellow is called "Vivid Yellow". Correct me if im wrong, but the only mica is Blue Mica and Black Mica, correct? I think the Mica makes it metallic looking.

same here...it's mainly the front and rear bumper for me. i just came in from cleaning my car and it's starting to get on my nerves...

i see 4 shades of yellow on my 02 MP5

-hood
-bumper/lip
-sides
-spoiler

but my friend has multiple shades of blue in his Laser Blue P5 also..

LOL, yep. The best part of my p5 are the sides.

i also have a yellow p5 you have to buff it with a high speed polisher and one step to keep your shine use a teflon wax its much better than wax it holds the shine longer and i am a pro detailer it was my job for 6 years

So, did you also see yellow come off when you used the high speed buffer? I would be very worried that all the paint would come off, since i see yellow when using a plain ol rag.

i dont think its just 2002 p5s my 03 paint job sucks as well, the paint on the front bumber around the fog light is slowly pelling back from the inside and the hood and rear bumper aaaww just pissis me off thinking about it (pissed)

My only complaint with the Black Mica is the thin layer used, as with all mazdas. It chips so damn easy. Back on topic, yes, Mazda yellow paint does suck balls. Turfburn tried to detail his MP3 before a meet a few weeks ago and was getting pissed about all the yellow coming off because of no real clearcoat... He also has a new bumper or something on there (can't remember what) so you can definitely see the new, shiny paint against the older dulled paint.

the silver on my p5 is not comming off but i feel like its not as shiny bright as it once was, i tried waxing it but it only made it a bit better not much

so you haven't waxed your car in 3 years? (shocked)

Polish!!!!!!!

Use a high quality polish with cleaners in it......Griot's fine hand polish is fantastic.......or even Kit's Scratch Out...It is a mild cleaner with polish in it...you won't believe the great results....you're wasting your time waxing without cleaning and adding polish to the paint first.....if you have particles, you better use a cleaning clay too......then I use a high quality wax like Blitz Wax from california care products.......then use a spray wax for enhancing after you wash your car......It will always look brand new!!!!! I've been using using Mother's spray wax.......there are many others on the market........remember.......No circular motions....straight back and forth!!!! The factory paint does chip easily.....get good with an artist's thin brush with the factory touch up paint.........and make sure you have a high quality tar remover......like the 3M product or the tarminator......other products are crap....

More like 1yr for the hood and roof. I tried about a year ago again, and to much yellow was coming off, so I gave up. Crap...

I've been using a product called Astro Shield for many years now. It works great - it's just a polish, no wax. Might be worth a try. You should be able to find it online (though it's been awhile since I've looked for it).
