SOLD: 2002 Silver Protege5 - 85k mi. $5500 OBO

I don't see too many complete cars FS here so I hope this is OK. Didn't find anything in the rules saying I couldn't.

I've had this P5 since it was new. It's been a great car. Runs perfect, interior is great. NE Ohio hasn't been so good on the body or wheels though. That pretty-much sums up the condition. Still a great daily driver with excellent gas mileage.

Hi,

I'm currently in the market for a P5, I live only one hour away, and I saw your CL ad weeks ago. Even though your car is exactly what I'm looking for and close to home, the reason I never contacted you is the amount of rust and the price tag.

Lots of people blame the rust on their region, but I have a 97 Tercel with 170,000 miles that spent 14 winters in the same region and is 99% rust free. It's not the region, it's the lack of proper cleaning maintenance within a region over time. When you live is high salt regions, you have to go to the pressure washer throughout the winter blasting all the edges when the temps are above freezing. Additionally, you have to thoroughly wash the door bottoms and all the body edges every spring with soap and water by hand. If you do this, all those edges will still be like new when the car is 10 years old.

The current price reflects a comparable one without rust. I might still be interested in buying it, but the price would have to be heavily adjusted to correct the rust issues.

I take the car to a no-touch car wash throughout the winters to clean the body and underside. Most P5 owners will agree that the rear wheel wells were poorly protected from corrosion and commonly show the same rust pattern in this area.

I've been driving in this area for about 25 years and had cars that survived rust-free (like your Tercel) and some (like the P5) that were much less tolerant of the conditions. The only things that were consistent across all of the cars and years were my level of care and the weather.

As I said in my OP, I'll take best offer. Feel free to make one. My bottom-line price will be adjusted for the rust but also for the low mileage.
