Hope this is in the right area. My wife has a 01 Protoge LX 2.0 and after reading about cleaning the EGR to resolve idle issues thought I would try it. Only the two bolts are severely damaged and the only way off is to cut them. With that being said the car has 230,000Km on it and don't want to get into a money pit situation.

The car's idle is all over the place and stalling frequently now. If I cut the EGR off is there anyway around putting a new one in that tight space? Or bypassing it or something so that a huge cost isn't incurred.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

If it comes down to it, unbolting the entire manifold isn't that hard to do and would give you access to the EGR. I recommend checking the intake tube for cracks and replacing the plugs and possibly coils and wires if necessary. In my P5 and MSP I have removed and cleaned the EGR and I never had an issue before but also never noticed a difference afterwords. (btw this isn't technically the right section, you want to be in the 99-03 Protege section not the MSP section)

You do not need an egr valve at all. Just eliminate the pos. It is just an emission part for reburning exhaust gases. If it is idling all over check all of the vacuum hoses and possibly check idle air control valve on a diagnostic scanner.
