1st gen 1.8 DOHC

Hi all

A question to first genners.

Is there a way to easily increase displacement, like changing rods from some other car or pistons? Over drilling from 1.8 -> 2.0 would be too much?

And also about the ECU, is it easily fooled to get better timing and fuel? And what would have to be used then?

Any other mod suggestions and dyno numbers from anyones mods?

Do you have a 1st Gen with a BP? There are plenty ways to get power from it. First, you can bump initial ignition timing to 18 BTDC. I got 7whp over the stock 10 with that mod. Also, you can install an RX7 Airflow Meter, and adjust the flapper door tension to fool the ECU into thinking it's getting more or less airflow than it really is. This is a good way to tune for A/F.

If you want more displacement, you can bore the cylinders 2mm safely, or 3mm if you want to risk it. 2mms over would get you 1929cc, and 3mm would get you about 1970cc. Flyin Miata also makes a stroker kit, which pushes cc to 1995. With an overbore, you could easily be at 2100cc. You could get away with a LITTLE bit longer rod, as the BP has a pretty tall dech hight. Maybe 1mm.

If you look at my sig, you can see what I'm getting with what mods. It's a decent amount of power considering I don't have a header yet. The key with 1st Gens is tuning. Tuning the ignition timing and AFM has to be done on the dyno. But for less than $200, you can net 10whp. I'll be installing Greddy E-Manage in January, so I'll let you know how easy it is to control the ECU then. It's OBDI, so there shouldn't be too many problems.
