1992 mazda protege problem

I wonder if anyone can help?

Our 92 Mazda Protege DX has recently started "dying" when being driven.

The first occasion it literally stopped, the gauges all dropped down, but the radio still had power.
When trying to restart, the engine would seemingly not catch
After several tries it restarted and was able to drive about 200m , before dying again. Had to be towed to

The second time it died whilst idling at an intersection, initially it would not start, but again after a few minutes it restarted and was able to drive home.

After first problem, garage put it on test for a whole day, found nothing wrong.
Battery is new, recently passed out of province inspection, so we have no idea where to start looking.

As the car is in good condition, with low mileage, and belongs to a new grad, we would like to try and remediate , but not if its going to cost a whole lot of money to diagnose

any input would be gratefully accepted

There are lots of possibilities. Could you tell us a little more about the car? Any recent work? Any oil or coolant leaks that could have fouled any electrical sensors?

How often does it cut out? If you can get it to repeat pretty quickly, it might be one of those things where you have to start swapping things out until you isolate the problem.

If it happens again and you're unable to get it started again, check to see if you have fuel and spark.

'92 mazda protege "dying"

I have also been experiencing a similar problem over the past few weeks - am wondering if your problem has been diagnosed/repaired since you first posted. Have had my car to mechanic 3x over last few weeks & happened again this afternoon.
Hope your problem has now been fixed & any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
thanks.
