1000 mile road trip/impressions

Went from DFW to Central Kansas for 5 days (which is about 430 miles each way). Including the driving we did while there, we drove a little over 1000 miles.

With me, the wife, 2 kids, and luggage, we managed almost 25 mpg. The best we got out of a fill up was 30.6 mpg. There was a 30 mile stretch in Northern OK/Southern KS where we were in a group that was averageing 90mph (I'll bet we lost some mileage there), and we drove into a head wind on the way back. Still 25 mpg isn't bad.

The car ran great, it was solid as a rock, and I really enjoyed driving it that distance.

Averaging 90?! I know how the roads are out there but come on, especially with your family aboard... (smash)

Regardless, I'm surprised you got 25mpg at that speed... usually above 70mph, gas mileage plumets exponentially. If I had to ballpark it I'd say you were only getting 10-15mpg tops through that stretch.

Drive safe :)

Top speed was 91, but the open road, good road quality (this was on a recently surfaced section), the stability of the platform, and other factors contributed in ability to travel at that rate. I have traveled other roads in this country with 80 mph speed limits, and ten over isn't that unreasonable. I've been driving since 1982 and have several driving schools under my belt. Add to that the fact that I constantly weigh the risks of speed and the actions/presence of other drivers.

Earlier this year we caravaned to Colorado with some other families and at speeds in excess of 95 I had to drop back. There are limits, and I found mine before others. Although I will press a speed limit, I don't go over my capabilities. This was done in our 2004 Excursion.

I forgot to mention that I didn't see ONE SINGLE 5 the entire trip.

Boy, are these vehicles scarce. I have probably seen about half a dozen since I bought mine 5,500 miles ago (April 17th).

Today I went through a drive through and 2 cars ahead of me was a new Toyota Matrix. The gal driving kept looking back at the 5.
