So far, I have almost 12000 miles on it. So far, I had 3 oil changes (every 4 months) and two tire rotations (every 5000 miles). I also had one wheel alignment (free) because the steering wheel was sitting to the left. I have not had any other problems at all, except brake pulsation due to the dealer over-torquing lug nuts. Fixed it with torque wrench. The car is comfortable on long trips, and versatile around town. I get about 20-22 mpg mixed (city/highway) depending on the outside temperature. The fuel with 10% Ethanol looks like it goes faster than regular gas. The engine revvs a little high when merging on highway. Is goes up to 5000 rpm sometimes. Is that normal? It's decent in snow. I only got stuck once last winter. We will see this winter. The OEM tires seem to be total crap. But then again they are on 17" rims. My wife hates the look of it (she hates hatchbacks in general, she loves cars like the civic.) But she likes opening the sliding door in the garage to get things out and the low height of the trunk. Thank God for the automatic climate. The audio is not bad either. I like the middle row best but find it very amusing and have a hard time not laughing when riding in the 3rd row. It makes the car look so much bigger than it actually is. LOL.

It'll be December for my 2010. I'm at 19,xxx miles tho. I do not regret getting it.
Edit: 22,xxx miles on the MZ5...wrong car!

we have about 13k on our 2010 at this point..no problems to speak of yet either even after a cross country trip loaded with gear

I was not too excited at first.

Well, I used to own a 2006 VW Jetta Value Edition. It was 5 years old, and suffered 3 collisions, but body-shopped to perfection every time (all not my fault, the car was a crash magnet)and had 60,000 miles. Besides having to pay $200-300 for a service interval every 10,000, the car started acting up a month after it was paid off. The air bag light came on, the check engine light came on, I could not open my gas tank, half of the 10 speakers stopped working, my driver side window would not open, and the door locking did not work, the car would stay unlocked and the interior light would be on for 30 min...so I fixed what I could and traded it in for a Mazda 5. I chose the 5 because it could seat 6, it was wagon/van, it looked sporty, and the dealer bartered a 2 more years warranty for free (5years bumper to bumper). Everybody laughs at me, or asks what is this thing, and why does it have sliding doors, there is no way it has 3rd row seats, is this a KIA/Scion, you have a hatchback/wagon, I have never seen anything like this before etc etc...I like the car though. It's good on gas, and with both rows down it becomes a space monster.

I used to build and race GTIs. I started in '89. I've had 5 GTIs. I'll never own another VW. I love them, with a mad passion, but the Bosch electronics are garbage. I think it has to do with Bosch making systems to go in so many different cars. They try to make the systems modular, but you can't do that with so many different systems. There should be Bosch VW, Bosch Audi, etc.

I agree...

When I first changes the brakes on my Jetta and noticed that the caliper has a VW/Audi/Seat stamp I said...oh s*** they are using same parts on different cars...that will not go well. When you have a demanding piece of machinery (made in Germany) driving a low quality piece (made in Mexico) you are gonna have problems. It sucks. I don't know what happened to the Jettas and Golfs that lasted 20 years...

Dec. anniversary for my Mazda5, too

Nice thread--made me realize that I'm coming up on my first anniversary w/the 5, too. Bought new in Dec. 2010, have about 9500 miles on it. Two oil changes, 1 tire rotation. Replaced rear wiper after car wash tore it off (they paid, of course ). Put new tires (Conti ExtremeContact DWS, chosen partly due to advice from this board) on it and got rid of the crappy Toyos last month in anticipation of winter driving, as I didn't like how the car handled snow last winter. Overall, I'm happy with the car, especially the handling. Love the auto climate control, the sound system is good enough for me. Space has been great--came in handy when moving my mother to assisted living last week. It's primarily a kid hauler and commuting vehicle for us, and it handles that job very well, replacing our prior Toyota Sienna. MPGs averages about 24 each fill up. I check it every time and it's been pretty consistent with my mix of city and highway driving.

Cool man...I wish I could get myself to get new tires, but I am stingy. Continentals are awesome...do not go to car wash like Delta Sonic that has the conveyor belt...it scrapes the underside of the MZ5 and also most of them use recycled water. Try and go to a LaserWash or something similar. I did not like how the car handled last winter either. I am surprised that you could go from a Sienna to a MZ5 but I am glad you like it. I went from a Jetta to an MZ5 and the difference in room is awesome.

We are coming up on our 2nd year for our 2010 5MT (in Februrary 2012).

Just over 51,000 miles at the moment (yes...75+ mile commute adds up fast).

Only issues so far: 1) "a wire broke" (service dept. term) to the outside temp sensor, disabling the auto climate control (a/c still worked fine), and 2) wore out the front sway bar bushings (with the ensuing "clunk" over bumps). Mazda extended warranty paid for the climate control fix, I haven't had a chance to get after the sway bar bushings yet.

The stock Toyos were awful in snow, I bought Hankook iPikes last winter which worked great. I replaced the original Toyos at 41,500 with Conti DWS (225/45-17). Night and day, much smoother riding, better grip everywhere.

I drive 85% highway at 60-65, so 27-29 mpg typically.

Great vehicle for us; sliding doors are great for getting in/out in the garage, room to haul our 3 German shepherds and their gear, fun to drive with the stick shift. We've added tint, Katzkins + seat heaters, JBR shift kit, JBR rear sway bar, JBR heavy shift knob.

I still hope to get in a serious headunit upgrade; in the meantime, I found a good-enough iPhone solution that uses a GoPoint OBD-II connection for power, then a ProClip mount on the driver's side + bluetooth connection for audio. That yields Pandora, Sirius/XM, fairly good metro-area GPS, and whatever's on the iPhone for tunes/info, not bad. And the DashCommand app for reading OBD-II info much like a ScanGauge or other products can.

My 5 cents :)
36k, bought used, 8 month ago, from Mazda dealership.
Since then
1) Creak noise from right pillar located between front and rear right door. Two visits to Mazda dealership without any improvements. Downloaded Workshop Manual and fixed it by myself.
2) Rain sensor bad sensitivity, something stop working for 10 -20 sec, sometimes stuck in "fast" mode. Two visits to Mazda dealership. On first they did RESET - no improvements, on second they refused to do anything. Still not fixed.
3) Creaking noise when turning right. Fixed by Mazda dealership under warranty by lubricating some bushings.
4) Noise from rear sway bar bushings. Replaced by Mazda dealership under warranty.
5) Jerking on low speed. Fixed by flushing ATX.
Lemon? (boom06)

It could be a lemon, but I think it's probably an abused rental car. Anyway, I hope not. They seem to be annoying issues, but nothing major. Then again I might get the same think when I reach 36000 then I will remember your words. Anyways, good luck.

Ours turn one year old first week of October. Had 19K miles on it already from a couple vacation and 50 miles daily commute. Never visit the dealer yet. Miss the free alignment due to over the mileage. I am still running stock toyos and actually do not think they are that bad. They still look brand new with around 15K miles on it. I do have dedicated Dunlop Winter Sport 3D tires on a spare set of wheels for winter duty. The only complaint I have is the rear shock seem way too soft even since brand new. I do not think the dealer will warranty it since there are no leak.

I have Tripoint Engineering rear sway bar and they are way too stiff for stock suspension and tires. The back end felt its going to come around a few times when I brake suddenly around turn. Not supposed to drive like that but the super sharp handling encourage me to drive a bit too fast when merging onto highway a couple times. I am thinking to swap it out with Mazda speed RSB to reduce this tendency.
