1.6L swap possibilities?

Hi everyone, my sister has a 99' Protege 1.6L. The crankcase seal needs redoing. To be honest the engine has been nothing but trouble, but then again it has just under 350,000kms so I dont blame it for cursing.

I was wondering if there are other engines that drop in the bay direct bolt up such as maybe the 1.8L? Or are there any JDM Mazda engines that can fit in this space without much trouble?
An example would be a KLZE fitting in a V6 Probe/MX6 bay, Im sure you know what I mean anyway.

Any comments appreciated! (bow)

Welcome to the Forums Tom! As far as swaps are concerned, there's certainly more than a few possibilities-- the limiting factors for anyone are:

1.) Knowledge Base/Shop Resources
2.) Time
3.) Financial Resources

If you've got a surplus of all of these, you're set to do just about anything. When my 1.8 liter hit around 100,000 miles, I did a full out swap into my 99 ES with a 2003 2.0 mazdaspeed protege drive and power train, electrical system (for the most part), and the suspension.

Fitment for swapping in a 1.8 or a 2.0 should not be a problem for your 1.6. You will, however, be running in to quite a few major and minor nuances that are going to present a lot of challenges and headaches-- especially in the electrical system. Your best bet is to research beforehand. If you're going to swap to the 1.8-2.0, I would highly recommend staying between the years of '99 and '00-- it will make your life so much easier.

Well the tranny is fine so if poss just the engine, but if there are swaps that require the tranny too Id be happy to hear about them. :)

^^ see my last post (edited for info). My other piece of keepsake advice that I can give you is to buy the donor car. You will thank me later when you're not trying to locate 5 different wiring harnesses, sensors, etc, etc, etc.
