I bought some thin black rubber cord and spiraled it around the front crossbar, and it completely eliminates the howling. I don't think this is a problem unique to the Inno racks, since I think Thules' square bars have the same issue. I ended up taking my racks off like you, and just leaving...

Got my Inno rack installed, and I'm really happy with them (especially the price). I ended up ordering the 58" cross bars and the length seems fine to me so far. I'll post if they end up being eyepokers. By the way, my kit did come with the rubber spacers. I know at least one other poster...
