2002 Mazda Protege LX. 380,000 miles and still going. Not sure this still counts as I put new rings, bearings, rebuilt head and seals in at 365,000. Runs better than ever...

    Timing belt tension pully/idler pulley

Hi Folks, I know this might be a dumb question, but.... is the timing belt tension pulley supposed to be stationary? in that... should it flex/move with only the spring tension after torquing? Reason I'm asking is, after putting the tension spring on and torquing the tension pulley to...

Cylinder bore tolerance (2002 Protege 2.0L FS engine)

Just an update.... Received the engine manual. It's an invaluable item for a rebuild. Thanks for that advice. I got the engine out, apart and plasti-gauged the main and rod bearings... all were within the tolerance listed in the manual. So, I threw new standard sized bearings in there just for...

Cylinder bore tolerance (2002 Protege 2.0L FS engine)

Thanks for the advice. It does "seem" like I'll need to go oversize... so I'll see what the shop tells me and post the results.... probably in a couple weeks. The motor/trans is ready to pull... just need a hoist and stand. If I have to go oversize... then that brings up a whole new set of...

Cylinder bore tolerance (2002 Protege 2.0L FS engine)

Does anyone know the cylinder bore tolerance before it needs to be bored out? (2002 Protege LX 2.0L FS engine) I can't find a mention of it in the manual. I'd like to get an idea what the shop will tell me when I take the block in for evaluation... specifically if I can get away with throwing a...

2002 Protege LX oil eater at 338k

I replaced the solenoid. The new one measured the same as the other ones. No telling how long it was bad. Never threw a code or anything. So now I'm back to it after taking a break for a couple months. The possibility of an upcoming trip to Florida has motivated me to get her back on the road...

1999-2003 protege auto trans average lifespan

Sorry I can't be any help with your squeak problem... ... But my 2002 Protege LX auto transmission has lasted 365K miles so far. Regular BG Flushes w/ Mercon 5 every 40-60K miles. Never dropped the pan. I think it needs new seals now as trans fluid started showing up along the trans to engine...

    Smoke on cold start

Very interesting thread. Thanks for posting this. I just replaced the FS9 head on my 2002 Protege due to 2 broken exhaust valves at 365K mi. Replacing was "quicker" than sending it out for repair. She smokes a lot on first start in the AM... then clears up. When I start it after sitting at...

2002 Protege LX oil eater at 338k

I just went out and tested the solenoid by connecting the solenoid directly to the battery momentarily. No clicking from the solenoid and no air passed through when I was blowing on the hose from the catch tank with power and ground applied. Bad?

2002 Protege LX oil eater at 338k

Well.... The oil consumption is still about the same. I should of listened to that little voice telling me to check the bore measurements while it was apart. Learned from that mistake. When the car is running a constant speed... I can set the cruise control and she sounds and runs like an...

2002 Protege LX oil eater at 338k

The pistons cleaned up nicely with some carb cleaner, rag, and a pointed oak dowel rod to scrape the tough stuff. Before cleaning the tops, I ran the piston to the bottom of it's stroke, oiled the piston walls then moved them to the top of their stroke and cleaned. Then moved them to the bottom...
