No, the "Racer" gauges work with out the Defi controller. It hooks up like a regular gauge.

Really? I would assume it would be on automatically when on defrost, but off for vent and floor.

You can turn it off too. If you put it on auto and then hit the A/C button, the A/C will go off but it will still control the fan speed and where the air comes out.

I heard the same thing when adjusting my headlights recently. Just try it. With the engine off and the hood open turn the headlights on and listen, and you'll hear what sounds like the motors running. However, I didn't see any noticeable change in the headlight aim, so it could just be something...
