The clay bar does remove the wax. Takes it right off along with all the other finish impurities. If you clay bar the finish follow with a good polish and then wax. Don't skimp on either. I would stay away from the dish detergent. It will strip the wax off, but also leaves a film on the clear...

Might want to invest in a porter cable 7424 DA buffer. One of the best polishers out there. Best thing is you can't ruin your finish with it but it does an awesome job. Doesn't generate heat like a typical high speed buffer does.
