The specs page at Mazdausa.com describes the manual tranny as a "SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed overdrive" whereas the AT description reads "SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed Sport with manual-shift mode" I assume that includes an OD gear but I couldn't find anything definitive. Just wondering.

I think you're fine... on mine it seems to take forever to go from full to 3/4, but then going from 1/2 to 1/4 happens relatively quickly. Come to think of it, all my previous cars' fuel gauges did that.
