For the sake of troubleshooting: Are you using OEM USB hardware or 3rd Party for CP/AA? Which version of iOS/Android are you on? The latest firmware has been out for a few years now and I am not seeing widespread issues with it.

As long as it’s the same generation, it should be fine. You cannot mix newer gen (7) with previous (6) nor vice versa.

You can always try to update directly to 74 from 55. But the general consensus is that you need to update to 70 before 74, when you are below 59.
