Quickly throwing out a few thoughts:
-Running the BP without any tilt is no problem. The Miata's do it all the time.
-If you use the 3rd gen gear box, axle alignment and length won't be a problem.
-96-98 Protege ES used a BP as did the 96 EGT (though hard to find), are all OBDII. However...
The highest octain gas that I've ever seen at a typical pump is 93. If you do use lower octain fuel, the car will automatically dial back the ignition timing. However, it is advisable that you stick with what the manual states as the center point of the tune is based on the specified octain...
Was the car previously wrecked? How far off is the camber from where it should be?
The stock top hats have 4 points of camber/caster adjustability by simply rotating them. There should be a white dot on top. Where is it located?

Another Challenge is in the books and I think I did well, all things considered. The car was slow as hell through the auto-x and most of the drag. Power delivery issues plagued the weekend, but fortunately, no issues from the drive line which responded well.
