Haha!
Now that there's all this info out there, and assuming that changing your oil and filter is a 1 (easy), then I guess I would rate changing the tensioner at a 5. How fast you do it really depends on how fast you can get up and down off the floor since you'll constantly be switching...
Well the mechanic was able to get the water pump belt on no problem using a lift! Cost me $108 for labor, but that's OK as it's done now.
My CX-5 has 81,412 miles on as of right now. I purchased it in August 2013 when it was still in transit from the Port of Entry. Delivered with less than 3...
Digbicks1234 and CX-5um, I appreciate both of your comments.
Digbicks1234 - No, your breaker bar and ratchet aren't going to fit. My breaker bar with the socket was twice as large as the amount of room there was. Even the Harbor Freight serpentine belt tool with a 17mm socket was too thick to...
Yup! Lack of access made it impossible to guide the belt as needed for the zip tie method. And the shape of the water pump pully along with the tight clearance would not allow use of the tool shown. The water pump pulley is in a really sucky place on the 2.5L, the 2.0L seems to have better access.
OK, so I was mostly successful today. I went through the wheel well again. Once I realized how much force was needed and how slow the tensioner would move (courtesy of those videos) I was easily able to relieve the tension and remove the serpentine belt. I used my long-handled 17mm ratcheting...
I had used the Mazda Moly oil in my CX-5 from new until I learned on here that the Idemitsu Zepro Eco Medalist was actually the exact same oil. I started using that instead because it was available in a 5 quart jug for around the same price (and sometimes less) that the Mazda branded individual...
The wrench I tried to use is 18" long. It has a ratcheting, swivel head with a splined profile insert. The ratchet "catches" after just 4 degrees of movement. This is the set I have.
From the top, I managed to engage the 17mm tension relief hex thing from the top, but there wasn't enough...
