I recommend the Mazda soft cargo liner (OEM #0000-8K-R05). It covers the entire cargo area, including the backs of the rear seats. It also has a velcro detachable flap that hangs over the rear bumper:

I have the OEM bought from a local Mazda dealer (with 15%-off coupon). They're good enough and fit properly. For twice the price I wouldn't buy the Weathertech.

My wife is 5'1" and has had both shoulders total joint replacement. She has difficulty raising her arms much above her head and has little strength to pull a hatch down when she can reach it. I don't think a power liftgate is a must, but it would be nice as an option.
That looks like a trim fastener. If it didn't fall off the outside, it could have come off the interior somewhere and then fallen out. Check the wheel wells, too.
