The car doesn't 'wake up' just by having the fob nearby. Some action has to take place for the fob to wake the car up. Either pressing the fob button or any of the action buttons on the car.
Key Suspend Function
If a key is left in the vehicle, the functions of the key left in the vehicle are temporarily suspended to prevent theft of the vehicle.
To restore the functions, press the unlock button on the functions-suspended key in the vehicle.
There is something in the owner's manual concerning this very thing. I'm too lazy to get the manual out and look but the above jogged my memory. There's something in there about deactivating the fob if left in the car.
You don't know that it's in the car, right? It's nowhere else though, right? Not in the garage or somewhere near the car?
It sure sounds like it's in the car from your description and if it's possible that it is, it is.
Get you a nice bright flashlight and start looking.

Dunno if it's possible to get one through the door edge or not. Know anyone with a Slim Jim? Dunno if those would work either. It's better than breaking a window though.
I was thinking the same. Perhaps there's some way of connecting cables down there in a way that hooks to the battery and getting the doors open that way? Of course, the other end of the cables connect to a known good battery.
