Final resolution. Mazda paid $1600 toward the head, only 95% of the cost, maybe a non admission of total liability? The dealer also offered a $500 discount thankfully.
Still $3000+ out of pocket. I have been assured the new head is latest spec and does not have the thin casting of the original.
2018 with 59,000 miles.
Mazda will only cover $1600 for a new head, no labor or other parts. Ouch!

On my 2018 I removed the plastic restrictive grill by the hood latch for more air flow. Also use AEM DryFlow filter. I am considering trimming the snorkel tube where it enters the airbox as it appears to be longer than necessary and adding a small bit of restriction. Has anybody done this yet?

I have 150 miles on new 19" LX25's.
Much quieter then A36, smoother on road cracks and better grip. Steering response is a little bit slower, so I turn in a bit quicker to compensate.
Overall very happy.
