From what I know, with 17's, you should be using 205/40/17 tires. The 205/45/17 tires you used was okay along with 215/40/17 tires. Your mileage would be slightly off but not really significant. But the 215/45/17's should cause problems and apparently it did. I don't think it's your springs...
