2009 Mazda 5 - steering and suspension repairs

Yup, lots of clunk-prone areas on this car. Glad you got it all fixed... mine's going up on the chopping block as soon as I get it all vacuumed out, for anyone that wants a 2009 manual. FYI, you can fit 26" diameter tires into the wheel wells with the stock suspension without issue. I'm running...

Mazda5 Wheel Fitment & Photo Guide

There's room for a 26" tall tire, especially if you're on the stock suspension. I'm on MX-5 wheels myself, and currently run 225/50-17 tires on the 17x7 +55 wheel spec. The fronts have a 1/8" spacer to clear the MS3 brakes, so the effective offset up front is +51-52 with the rear staying at +55...

Struts blown at 85,000 miles ?

Probably had a defective shock- happens sometimes, regardless of the quality of the brand. I still trust Bilsteins overall. I would send it back for a refund since you've swapped to another brand. Both KYB and Bilstein are quality OEM level brands.

    Buying a Mazda5 with 86k?

86k is fine. My 2009 has 145k, and the only engine issues I've had are needing to replace the MAF sensor (typically a 100k item), and changing one coil pack (also typically a 100k item). You might have to worry about the air conditioning and suspension, but most of those issues should be solved...

What have you done to your Mazda5 today?

Honestly, other than a coil pack dying at 140k and having to replace the MAF sensor at 130k I've had no issues with the engine itself, and mine is sitting at 145k. Coil packs and MAFs dying after that kind of mileage actually isn't uncommon. Ah, good to know. I think some of the pre-2008 models...

What have you done to your Mazda5 today?

My 5 will come available soon, in a month or so, 2009 stick without sunroof though. The 5 is pretty much a stretch 3 with another row of seats and sliding doors. Practically everything can interchange under the hood and at the corners. Some things are different like the size of the rear brakes...

What have you done to your Mazda5 today?

Welcome! The Exedy OEM replacement one I put in was actually lighter than the factory clutch, so I can't imagine 40% stiffer is that bad. ALWAYS use lube. :D :D :D :D :D :D Yeah not necessary to use it, but it's another safeguard from squeaking. I always use both.

Confirmed: MS3 brakes fit under OEM MZ5 (gen 1) wheels

Honestly? I'd expect the effect to be zero. The cooling is coming from the rotor vanes, not the air in between the spokes and the caliper. There's so much air rushing around in that area while driving that spoke spacing doesn't matter for that. The rotor is the heat sink for the heat generated...

$40 Amp+LOC Install to OEM Radio

They're bigger because they use better guts and include the line output converter in the same chassis... but yeah. I used a PPI 5 channel class D amp under the passenger seat in the wife's 5. 4x60 to the corners, and 200w to the subwoofer. If you remove the storage tray in the rear under the...

To keep poly bushings quiet, wrap the sway bars with teflon tape, then grease the hell out of them, then install bushings.

$40 Amp+LOC Install to OEM Radio

Kenwood and Alpine also have pretty awesome mini 4 channel amps that are very similar to this Nitro amp- and both have high level inputs (speaker level inputs) built into them I think. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VVYL46/?tag=m20b7-20 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JEC0YFQ/?tag=m20b7-20

Confirmed: MS3 brakes fit under OEM MZ5 (gen 1) wheels

They're complete Centric brand replacement caliper kits. Caliper and bracket all together, freshly built. I'm really happy with them, so if anyone does them with these calipers, they need to be cleaned and painted. I didn't care that much. Mine started to rust after just a few days, so it wasn't...

Mazda 5 Monroe Shocks 1.5" shorter than OEM

That's not that much shorter... it may not make a difference at full extension, given the range of the rear suspension. My aftermarket shocks are short enough to actually limit the droop travel of the suspension quite a bit. The Monroes will function fine, but you may lose a touch of droop...
