He could also be getting the "fumes" because he has an exhaust leak. Check your "mating" points of your exhaust, where the separate pieces meet, for leaks. If so, you may need to get better gaskets to seal it.

It really doesn't matter whether you go DP or TP. If your seals are weak, or the ones that are "bad", you'll most likely get smoke regardless.

come to think of it, you may have to remove the brace that is under there. i dont think you can remove the cat without removing that brace. but i am sure you are already aware of that. if not, again its just unbolt the brace, unbolt your cat, install the test pipe, bolt up, replace brace, bolt...

just unbolt, then bolt back up. be sure to make a couple test runs and then check for leaks.
