GLA is about 60" tall, they raised it that height to be classified as SUV/light truck (intentionally just tall enough to be classified as such, resulting in some leeway on gas mileage, emissions, safety regs). CX-5 is about 65.7" tall w/o roof rails.

Yes, premium brands producing GLA, X1, and Q3 that are smaller than CX-5. Allows them to hit a lower entry price point for those wanting the Benz, BMW, Audi badge too.

No kidding slick marketing, but the proof is the actual sales numbers, they are HUGE. Compact SUVs/crossovers are a very high growth segment, so why not subcompact SUVs/crossovers (topic here) too. Minivans-not cool, station wagons-not cool, Hummers-not cool, so it seems based on actual sales...

Yes. And in major markets such as United States, the market for small SUVs is much bigger than for station wagons.

Yes and lucrative too. These days just because a SUV is small doesn't mean the MSRP is cheap. Another example is the best-selling Kia model in the US, the Soul. Designations as SUVs/light trucks in the US gives the automakers some regulatory slack from a emissions/gas mileage/safety standpoint.

The success of the Buick Encore in some key markets might be a good indicator...
