ah, I made the same mistake as you... you have the first part right....... cargo cover goes under the little side of the lift gate clip, and you are done. it should NOT go over the bigger side of the lift gate clip, the spring is only there to apply pressure on the cover clip bar up...

agreed, looks ridiculous, I would just suck it up and drill holes and secure to bumper, in New York City, they don't mess around, they will stop you for no front plates and for dark tints (new NY tint law now, can't pass state inspection if you have tints) tinting shops closing business...

Don't use them for towing, they're not strong enough, Like what others have said, they're just used to secure the CX5 down during rough sea on the boat. I have seen some people use them to secure kayaks though...
