The hiss you are hearing is the air rushing through the intake....it's perfectly normal. The factory unit is tuned to be silent by using baffles, but that silence = restriction. the hiss is even louder with a metal inlet pipe behind the intake.

Great write up. The oil does get filthy black in no time. I used to change the oil in my 04 TL every 7000 miles and it was still pretty clean.
