Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Just returned from a two week 3200 mile road trip. The Mazda performed well. Myself and my wife now feel a litle more confident with the vehicle. I can say that the new engine with the reflash appears to have fixed the issue. At least for now. After reading the posts of the last few days it...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Going to put the new engine to the test for the next couple of weeks. We have put around 3000 miles on this engine and all seems well. Most of these miles are just in town driving due to the fact that my wife still does not trust the car totally. We are heading out on a road trip from Oregon...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

As I stated in a much earlier post, the number of people on this thread is a miniscule sampling of the total number of 2018 and possibly 2019 CX-5 on the road today. It is still to be determined how many actually have this issue due to the fact that it is very hard to determine if you have the...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Thanks yrwei52. Now jjm86m is in the same boat as we are. The car is fixed and, in our case, has a new engine but we still dont feel secure. Because, like you, we are not sure that we buy Mazdas explanation of the cause. And, since there is no indication of the problem existing until its too...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Awesome job jjm86m!!! I hope you get a complete resolution and some satisfaction of knowing that you can say "I told you so" to your dealership and Mazda.

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

"Thanks GoHawks. I took the car to the dealership and the diagnostic test was P0304=Cylinder 4 Misfire. They did reflash the PCM and the problem seemed to have been resolved with the flash. I asked them if this was simply software or if it was hardware related. They said software only but now...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Yes. And remember jjm86m, your car coded a misfire on cylinder #4. Reflashing the pcm is not the correction for this. The reflash corrects the oil pressure to the lifter problem. The low oil pressure is what creates the rocker arm issue, which in turn creates the misfire. So, the reflash is...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

AMEN shadonoz! my thoughts exactly. And I bet it would be any Mazda engineer or technician's thoughts if they experienced what myself and others have experienced! In fact my dealership told me I had to take the vehicle after they recal'd the camera and we argued about the car being unsafe to...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Yeah I understand that. The other thing that hasn't been mentioned in all of this is it is not a consistent problem. Meaning, there were many times I would accelerate and have no trouble. So that didn't help us much in trying to figure out what was going on either. After it happened in the...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

UMMM...we did not know there was a problem with acceleration. We figured that out the last time it did it. All indications were a glitch with our camera. Even the dealership that we took it to said that is what the codes showed. So driving it NOT knowing there was a problem with acceleration...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Thanks yugrus. From what I read here I think you a backing my decision to continue on with our vacation. We really had no idea we were going to be put in this situation. Sorry to everyone out there who thinks we made the wrong decision.

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Thanks ruthrj. Its easy for people to sit on the sidelines and say would have, should have, or could have. But none of us know how we will react to a situation until we are put there.

Dougal, thanks for the back up. And Yes I do know that. I agree with you that the Firestone issue would have been a better example. I was just trying to make a point that it seems like nothing is ever an issue until somebody dies.

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

The Toyota throttle issue didn't effect very many cars either. But once it became the cause of a few deaths it became a huge issue. This has the same potential!! And if it is your family member that dies it really doesn't matter what percentage of the cars have the issue. Yours did!

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

EXACTLY!! When my car did this the dash lit up and all kinds of audible alarms went off. That was more than enough to tell me something was wrong. Adding the limp mode into this accomplishes nothing except putting the driver in an awful situation. This is what i told the Mazda Western US...

Dangerous cylinder deactivation trouble on 2018 CX-5 and Mazda6 models

Each time we experienced this we were basically in the middle of nowhere. One time on a two lane mountain road. One time on the freeway. And one time on a two lane highway. We were on vacation traveling from place to place. The first 2 times we were in broad daylight and all of our alarm...
