oem tires in my experience also just don't seem to last that long. i have also been perplexed that many of the oem tires i have had in the past seem to be expensive tires, at least when checking prices on tire rack or discount tires, but have typically been pretty crappy tires.

I agree, I wish Mazda put 18s on the CX-5. It seems to me to be a better tire/wheel option taking into consideration price, performance, looks and ability to get a wide range of replacement tires. 19s certainly look nice, but do lack in my opinion in many of the other key areas.

Put in my order yesterday for a 2016 CX5 Touring FWD Silver with Bose/Moonroof, wheel locks and all weather mats, $24.8k excluding taxes and plates. There were $1k of rebates.

The other issue with the 19 tires is that when it comes time to replace them there currently are not many options in that tire size where with the 17 the options are plentiful.

I have driven the Escape many times as rentals while on business and I do like it. Gas mileage didn't seem that great, but other than that it seemed to be a nice vehicle. I have never owned a Ford though and not sure what long term reliability would be like.

Sorry to hear that about your new car. The lightweight steel used on new cars is no match for hail. I have an older Mazda 3 that got hit last year with hail. A few good dings on the hood and roof. Didn't bother to get it fixed though as it is an older car and will be sold shortly.
