I'm not as versed in off road detail, but I know Euro cars often have torque vectoring left to right. Which helps handling the curves on pavement. To my knowledge, no Mazda has this.

I love my cx9, but technology is a big descriptor. If his son loves using the infotainment system, I'd argue that tech lags. Your MDX AWD is more advanced, as is the lane centering. If OP thinks of these 3 things as tech, the Mazda could be improved.

At his height, make sure he sits in it for a good drive. If he's built wide as well, some feel the cx9 seats are too narrow, making for very uncomfortable pressure points. I know you said speed doesn't matter, but if he's coming from a hemi to the cx9...it might suddenly matter.

Does it fail midway thru the fold or stay tucked in? If mine ever failed I'd prefer it be jammed and stayed "out". Then I'd live with it rather than pay that much out of pocket. Nice feature, but I can live without.

Just noticed you mentioned it was detectable when you have it in garage, which I had same. But I also noticed it from inside car while driving, not sure what that might mean in terms of source but maybe check for that on a drive before speaking to the dealer.
