Blower Motor assembly installation for 2013-2016 Mazda CX-5

Blower Motor assembly installation for the heating/AC system.

The blower motor for the heating/AC in my 2016.5 CX-5 GT failed. Replaced the blower motor assembly along with a couple of fuses.

In my case, I also replaced two of the heater/AC related fuses in the engine bay's fuse block, as a precaution (even though they were intact and not 'blown'), as many of the original fuses are showing their age and fragility:
  • #19 fuse -- 40A (Air conditioner/heater); and
  • #30 fuse -- 7.5A (Air conditioner).

After the swap, the new blower motor is working perfectly. Probably didn't need the new fuses, but as inexpensive as they are I preferred to be proactive. Might well swap the whole bunch of engine bay fuses, given they're all fragile and showing their age. "Cheap insurance", IMO. Need a few more spares anyway.

Parts:
  • Existing blower motor assembly, at least for my 2016.5 CX-5 GT: P/N KD45-61-B10, Blower Motor (Mazda OEM)
  • New blower motor assembly: P/N PM4106, VDO/Continental aftermarket brand, purchased from RockAuto
Procedure -- utterly simple, so I didn't take any photos of the process:
  1. Note: This procedure takes about 30 minutes, from start to finish.
  2. Turn the ignition OFF.
  3. Ideally, disconnect the NEG cable from the battery terminal.
  4. Remove the glovebox door assembly -- open the glove box, press inward the two fat tabs at the upper-left and upper-right of the side of the glovebox door, then unhook the stopper arm located at the lower-right of the door.
  5. Remove the underside plastic cover (below the bottom of the glovebox door) -- press the two tabs at the front of this cover, then remove. The blower motor assembly is now accessible.
  6. Disconnect the harness from the connector on the blower motor.
  7. Remove the 3 screws from the underside of the blower motor that hold it into the bracket. The existing motor assembly can now be removed.
  8. Install the new blower motor assembly, install the 3 screws, attach the wiring connector to the blower.
  9. If the NEG cable from the battery was disconnected, reconnect it.
  10. Turn the ignition ON, then check function of the heater, A/C, and the blower motor's speed functions.
  11. If all is working properly, "button-up" the lower panel and the glovebox door.
  12. For the first hour or two of operation of the new blower motor, expect a bit of 'new parts stink' to come through the heater/AC vents. Recommend keeping the windows cracked open while this processes continues. In my case, it lasted for the first hour of operation.
