How they are still operating is beyond me. I don't think hanging their hat on the EVs is going to help much unless something changes at that company.

They used to have such cool cars.

There seems to be some good in the cars still but it's just such an old lineup with dated interiors.

I have been waiting for the new Z... the delivery date keeps getting delayed.. Nissan is pretty messed up in management. For those who don't know, the new Z isn't entirely new... yet, Nissan still fails to deliver them on time. They are on hold for delivery, but no one knows why.. lack of communication, bad product planning ..
I might give it up if it is not available by Spring/2023.

Although I’ve never been a Nissan fan, but their new and the world's first production variable compression ratio engine has impressed me on design.

CX50 sales not really skyrocketing for October. Mazda needs to prioritize further updates to the CX5 to keep it competitive as sales are dropping a little bit as well. Giving is the newer version of the 2.5NA that the 3 and CX30 got with 191 HP would be a reasonable step for 2024 and not be cost prohibitive.

There are just no CX-50's to be had. People on CX-50 Reddit have been waiting for months for cars to be available, even ones they ordered. I'm in the same boat, I ordered one a couple of weeks ago and have to wait at least 2-3 months

Not really buying the availability argument to explain the poor sales. My Mazda dealership (Wantagh) has 25 CX50's available. For argument's sake, they only have 10 CX30's, and that has more than double the sales over the last several months than the CX50.

If you're looking at a dealers web site to judge availability, it almost certainly is also showing 'in-transit' units that can be 2-3 months out

Indeed. Among the 61 CX-50s I found at 7 dealers near me, only 12 are already on sites. The rest are in transit. The biggest dealer among them has 5 CX-50s. You will have to pay above MSRP if you can't wait.

Its true, poor sales numbers does not tell the whole story. As I posted in the cx50 thread,my dealer in GTA told me if I put an order now it will take probably 1 yr to be fulfilled.

Depends. One dealer in my area differentiates by putting an in transit flag on those listings. They even have check boxes for "on the lot" and "in transit" for screening. They have five CX-50s on the lot at the moment, like this:

The other Mazda dealer in my metro area indicates in each listing either "at the dealership" or "in transit", but no screening checkboxes. By my count they have seven CX-50s on the lot, like this:

These are not high volume dealers, by the way. This is more of s domestic manufacturer's market perhaps because there is a Ford stamping plant, a Chevy engine plant and a GM radiator plant in the area.

I don't know why a dealer would say there is a 1-2 year wait for a CX-50 unless it's for a particular trim / option package not yet being produced in Alabama.

Yes. Not understanding that either. Dealership near my area has several still on the lot. I looked at one side by side to a CX5 several weeks ago and it's still there.

It seems as if some of these dealerships are trying to create demand or fake demand.
Perhaps they are trying the "Fake it til you make it." mantra.

I agree with you on this. The dealers have been loving the past 18mths selling at or above MSRP and want to make you think it will stay this way forever. It most certainly won't.

Speaking of the devil

Mazda Alabama's starting wage for line work is $17/hour. At Subaru Indiana I'm seeing $14/hour which looks like a recent number. Both manufacturers provide decent benefit packages from what I can tell.

Subaru says they can't compete with McDonalds at that wage? That's probably because they don't want the people who are working the fry cooker at the starting wage and getting bupkis in benefits because they're 16 years old high school drop outs or have a sketchy work or criminal record. They want the assistant manager with a good work record who has worked his way up to benefits and a decent wage. Yeah, that might be a problem. Even so, the 16 year old dropout might prefer $2 more per hour over the benefits anyway.

In my neck of the woods, which is a slightly below average cost of living region, the de facto minimum wage is running around $18, maybe more. My neighbor can't get people to work in one of his restaurants for $18.50.

Then there's all the skilled and semi-skilled workers they need. Perhaps not so competitive there either.

Setting up out of the reach of the UAW is not all it is cracked up to be when labor shortages come a calling. And the UAW may get involved anyway sooner or later.

For a domestic product from Alabama, there’s no way when the vehicle marked as “In Transit” that particular vehicle would take 2 ~ 3 months to arrive. 1 ~ 2 weeks tops, unless Mazda’s logistics system is having serious problem.

Hmmm. Perhaps the Mazda article from previous poster is exaggerating???

While the article says it can't compete with McDonald's wages of $20 to $25 per hour, MCD's own website(for Indiana) is offering $13 per hour.

While I completely acknowledge that the newer generation want to start at the top making six figures a year( they all think they'll be influencers) and hence a labor shortage...
There still seems to be a discrepancy in reporting.

Likewise, the article blames shortage of autos(due to shortage of workers) for the sales slump.

Meanwhile I have seen new cx50s sitting on our car lots for months. As well as ued car inventory has gone drastically up. People have cut spending, especially on autos.

Mazda seems to be caught in a loop of misdirection and blaming the wrong factors for their own car slump and worker shortage.

The true reasons are:
they can't hire the skill level the want for the low wage they offer...
And the sales slump is due to the current recession we are entering.

Well, I guess it's an area thing then. Where I am (Washington DC area) there are very few, and certainly none in the color/model I want. One dealer had one in transit, but already had a deposit on it. It's now come in and still shows on the website, but when I called back, they said the buyer is in N.Carolina (two states away) and hasn't been able to make it up to take delivery - yet it still shows up available on their site. BTW the dealers are back 'down' to MSRP here now - despite having none to sell.

I put a deposit on an order, but no idea when I'll get it (prob>3 months)

I don't buy that it is a low wage, nor factory issue. The Toyota Corolla Cross is made in the same factory alongside the CX50 in Alabama. For October, they sold 7,419 Corolla Cross, roughly triple the sales of the CX50 for the same month.

In my mind, while the CX50 has some differences from the CX5, it is not significantly better, yet it costs more. This is the basic issue, and this is why the sales are going to be slow. Perhaps when the CX50 gets the hybrid powertrain, and the CX5 does not, then the CX50 will be a more attractive proposition. So far, the market is not responding well to it, and Mazda should seek to understand why that is.
